Insurance quicky

#1 Post by sabestian » Thu Jan 29, 2009 6:41 pm

Just a quick question: if the bike is declared SORN, I do not have to have it insured, right?

Samray,
Seb moved out of the UK,

You don't need the insurance, just be careful when your road tax/sorn expires. You can/will get a fine for not renewing it (or declaring export of the bike in your case).

I am in the process of registering the bike in Poland, the problem is that my policy (UK one) expires soon, sooner than I will be able to get Polish plates. Without Polish plates on my bike I cannot insure it here. I can't (and don't want to) renew my UK policy because I'm not living in the UK anymore.

So, summing up, there will be a period that the bike will not be insured.

The only way that I see to go round these issues is to declare the bike SORN online (it is off the road anyway - it's winter in Poland :smt003 ) and insure it here when I get the plates.

I haven't send the permanent export notification notice off yet as *cough* I wasn't sure if the bike stays here or goes back to the UK *cough cough* Permanent export equals to more than a year abroad (that's what it says) so I don't think it's a problem.

Nah, don't worry about the UK insurance, just keep an eye on the road tax expiry date. You could ignore it, but as you said, it takes 5 minutes online (I had to sorn mine recently).
As for registering the bike in Poland, I'm not 100% sure how it works but you'll need to un-register the bike in the UK and provide paperwork for the Communications Dept. in PL. I'm sure there's plenty of onfo on the web on this.

Good luck.

There is, sure. I have searched dozens of websites and all of them describe a situation of a vehicle that was bought in the UK and then was to be registered in Poland under buyer's name.

I am not sure how to de-register in the UK, I guess it would be the notification of permanent export?

The Communication Dept did not ask about it at all, just a certificate (V5)

Yes Sab, it's the notification of permanent export part of the V5 registration document that you need to fill in and send to DVLA. If you don't have a V5 you need to fill in this form:

http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/forms/v756.pdf

But I'm guessing you'll have a V5, so just fill in and return the relevant section.
