Oh No! not another newbie

#1 Post by Taper One » Sun Nov 23, 2008 8:54 pm

Yup, 'fraid so

Hi,

thought I would say hello as I am now the proud owner of Alkydale's Falco https://www.ridersite.com/viewtopic.php?t=3511.

Not had an Aprilia before. In fact, I havn't even ridden this one yet as I only picked it up yesterday in the van (400 mile round trip). Not a stranger to V twins though as I also have a Cagiva Navigator (stop laughing at the back :smt003 ).

Anyway, as far as I can tell, it appears standard apart from the Leo Vince cans, but I will investigate and report back.

Will no doubt be doing the standard mods such as side stand (one on e**y looks interesting), double bubble screen, de-restriction, Air box mod, rear shock etc etc.

Can't wait to ride it!

Cheers

Pete H

welcome

how is your credit card?

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Hi Taper One,

Excellent choice of bike and super double-plus choice of colour scheme (mine's the same and I love it). To me the black frame just tops off what is already a very handsome motorcycle. Looks like you've also got the tail tidy which cleans the back end of the bike up nicely.

I can recommend eBay for Ohlins shocks - I got an RSV R shock with adjustable everything for £230 quid and when it arrived it looked just like a brand new part. Your bike may already have been derestricted; I think most dealers do it at first service.

Which part of the country are you from?

Just updated my profile for location. I am in NW London

I like the colour scheme as well.

There is an Ohlins shock on ebay at the moment but if you enlarge the pictures, it looks a bit tatty around the body.
Does a Mille shock bolt straight on?

Cheers

Hi and welcome Taper One.

Yep - almost standard - those Hi-mount Leos look nice and as Mangochutney says, it's had the tail tidy done.

Think the only other things I can see from the pics are the indicators and hugger.

Welcome to your project ......

Your task list is as follows:
  • 1. Sidestand .... various mods available - read up at your leisure but complete your task before it falls over
    2. Rear shock
    3. well, whatever you want really - 15t front sprocket is a cheap mod to give it a bit more low speed rideability (and low down oomph) ... but lots of options when your bank balance allows ...
Have fun

The Mille Ohlins is a good mod - depends what year it's from as to whether it bolts straight on.
The early Milles (up to something like 2000) have the same linkages as the Falco (dog bone and triangles). The later ones don't. For them you need the linkage from the mille too - then it all bolts up fine - the basic geometry is essentially the same.
The new shape ones (2004 onwards) are a different geometry and the bits don't just carry over.

Hope this helps

Welcome to the site Pete. :smt006
Nice choice of bike, hope you enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed mine for the last 4 1/2 years.
However, it will seem a bit tame after the Cagiva Navigator (stop laughing at the back :smt005 )

Catch you later.

Cheers for the welcome Guys. I can see I am going to enjoy this forum :smt003

Don't knock the Navi too much, it has surprised many who choose to knock it :smt002 . It has taken me over to Europe many times including Estroril. However, I just had to go back to something with a bit more, eerrrr, hoof as we say.

The Falco is the same as the pics that Alkydale posted up. The man just never had time to ride it because of the foot operation and new baby. Top man he is too. It even still has the bobbles on the rear tyre.
Won't be there for long then :smt005

Has anyone used the side stand that the guy on Ebay is selling? For the money, it dosn't seem to bad.

Oh, and by the way, the credit card is clear. OOHH AAWW :smt003 The Kids could get sweet FA this Christmas.

Cheers

I am using the sidestand off ebay Pete.
I found it an easy fix, and it worked well.
(It worked better for me as I don't have easy access to welding kit).

It fitted straight on and worked perfect, (with no welding or tapping required!). Didn't fold away quite as far as I liked, so just had to grind a bit of metal off the "stop" lug on the stand itself at a later date, so goes up further now.
Only MAJOR problem I had was the need to file off about 2 mm from edge of the Skidmarx belly the belly pan at the back, where it just caught.

Somebody else tried one of the early ones and the welding was not too good so he had to re-weld, mine was fine.
