A couple of interesting bits and pieces

#1 Post by D-Rider » Sun Oct 05, 2008 11:09 pm

Came across these on ebay:

Apparently they're not just differently styled but work differently too

Here's a video of the exhaust and some sort of induction gizmo from Harris.
Assuming this is not "bikers snake-oil" then this stuff looks very interesting .... and also, I guess, outside my budget

http://link.brightcove.com/services/lin ... 1315742466

.... and this is what Harris have to say:

Thing is .... I can't find this InTech gizmo on Harris' site .... I'm betting it's a bit over sold.

Dunno whether the exhaust lives up to performance claims ..... but it sure looks pretty.

Want to hear the exhaust on an Aprilia? .....

and another pic .....

Surely it's just that the welds (and exhaust) have been left in an unpolished state a la MotoGP. Quality of weld on the photo that D-Rider posted is excellent.

Hmmm.... I can't decide whether they look great or f-ugly. Or something in between.

As for the noise, yes, they sound great. Except TLoML already complains about how loud the Falco is...
It's the V-twin thing. There's just something about it that inline-4s don't have at all, and V-4s don't have enough of.

No - I think they look great as well. In fact I think they will be going on my Falco sometime early next year. I can't quite make up my mind whether I prefer them polished or unpolished (for that authentic MotoGP look).

I've spoken to the guy who markets them and he's done quite a few Aprilias already, so shouldn't be any problems. They're based in Fenton (Stoke on Trent) and can 'tune' the exhausts to your requirements loudness-wise.

Cheers for pointing them out, Andy!

Hmmm, dunno, if they were titanium then yes, but there's no need to have welds like that for steel, so they're sort of pretending to be something they're not which puts me off.

Nooj, I'm pretty sure that when you weld stainless, that's what it looks like if you leave it unfinished and unpolished. Some years back when I had a TL1000S, I had a custom exhaust made up for it with stainless pipes and titanium cans. I was so keen to get the pipes on the bike that I didn't have them polished and left them in the exact same state as the cans we're talking about.

I quite liked the heat marks around the weld, especially as it drew attention to the quality of the welds (which were the best I'd ever seen). The welds on these cans aren't quite as good, but they're certainly not too shabby IMHO.

A good TIG weld on thin sheet should not be raised from the surface like on the very top pic, the weld on my CCC can is barley visible (see tigcraft pic attached...not on my bike unfortunatley!)

No doubt the style of them looks nice just I think the welding excecution and marketing skills are lacking

It's not the quality of the welds I'm on about, it's the fact that they are there to start with. Titanium has to be cut and welded in sections like that because it can't be bent and formed like steel. Steel is much more pliable, so doesn't need to be formed that way, so it's 'not the real deal' in my eyes if that makes sense.

In itself, at face value, it looks good, but to me it's trying to look like something it isn't.

Ah yes - take your point, Nooj.

But I thought that was the whole point of bling? :smt003
