Quick q re paint

#1 Post by sabestian » Sun Aug 17, 2008 6:29 pm

Hi guys, I remember back in the nineties ...

<tilts his head, image blurs, black and white only, Depeche Mode soundtrack>

I painted my bike with a can paint just to find out that the paint dissolves in petrol...Do I need to mention that the petrol tank was the main part I painted? :smt009

Anyway ...

<focus sharpens again, colour is back, James Blunt softly squeaks>

I need this sort of easily removable aerosol spray paint now. Want to try a few colours on La Sporca (Photoshop doesn't do it for me), without risking damage to the existing paint.

Want to try matt black all around, metallic black all around, and a few more elaborate colour schemes...And then just flush it all safely off with some sort of delicate solvent (not water, I don't want to end up with the paint all over my gear come the rain!).

I don't feel that confident spraying the whole bike with petrol either...

Any suggestions?

I seem to recall a chat just the other day, ref spraying bikes and cars. The paint that peels, lol well, comes off in petrol seems to be the stuff Halfords mix at the counter. One old boy was proper going off on one about the fact he got his paint mixed 'special like' then the fecker came off when he filled the Bike up and spilt some.

I cant confirm it is going to be that easy to remove though. maybe a light dusting of talcum powder, then spray on that..

Maybe you can get a paint supplier to mix up the colours in a water based paint which is fairly easy to remove. I used to use it on alloy wheels and it only stuck after it was lacquered.

Personally I wouldn't try it... panels cost plenty if it all goes pear shaped. However...

I sprayed my old Falco a couple of times using a cellulose based 1 pack paint (I'll need to check in the garage to make sure of this). After doing a grand job of priming, spraying the base colour and lacquering it, it still smudged off when I spilt petrol on it. I couldn't say to what depth it smudged off, but I'm sure with a bit of rubbing it would have gone all the way back to plastic.

Unless you use a petrol resistant lacquer (which is sold at Halfords) or use pucker 2-pack paint (full of nasty isocyanates), then I'd guess you'd be able to remove most paint using solvents (thinners/gun cleaners).

If your dead set on trying it, why not use a couple of layers of cling-film to protect the panels, spray on the cling film...

Oh aye - and if you couldn't have guessed - my disclaimer, if it all goes tits up then don't blame me !!!
