Temperature Question

#1 Post by sidestand » Sun Aug 10, 2008 5:34 pm

Anyone know when the radiator fans are supposed to cut in
Mine don't until the guage shows 97 degrees ! even then, only the left fan cuts in & drops the temp down to 95, then stops
Is this normal ?

the temperature is spot on, but both fans should kick in so that needs sorting.

Ta mate, think I'll have a wiggle of the connections first - followed by an attack of WD40 if that don't work :smt001

The workshop manual states the fans should switch on when the temperature hits 100 C and switch off when it falls to 85 C.

Obviously there will be a bit of tolerance and one bike will vary a little from another.

Hope this helps.

BTW if you haven't got the workshop manual, download it from Martin Poll's website - his website is a great resource .... and he's a forum member :smt004

The homepage is here: http://www.martinpoll.dk/index.htm

The Aprilia stuff is here: http://www.martinpoll.dk/div_april.htm

Mine comes on at an indicated 96 - not surprised that there's some tolerance - even if the nominal is 100.

Your switch off seems mighty close to your switch on though - I'd have expected more hysteresis than that.

I know my fans work coz I looked down once on a very hot day and saw them spinning.... BUT....

What in all the world are you lot doing riding around monitoring your temp readouts and fans? :smt017

I can't hear mine and they are probably the very last thing I am watching as I ride.

mine generally runs btween 76/78 been to 90 once. As for the fans the only time i`ve seen em turning was when they "windmill" with airflow through the rads, but I realy should be looking where I`m going :smt003 It would be nice to think the ambient temps will be high enough in the remainder of this summer for me to see if the fan motors work.
Living in hope.

P.S the Honda fan comes on at 105.

Don't you feel that surge of thrust when they kick-in and haul you through the air?

(I hear mine switching in and out when I'm negotiating traffic at low speed)
