BMW unveils Superbike prototype
Eurosport - Thu, 17 Apr 11:25:00 2008
BMW has released pictures of the prototype for its first World Superbike, which will race in 2009.
The German manufacturer will release 10,000 models for general sale in order to meet homologation rules. The bike, known as the S1000RR, weighs in at 190kg in road trim and delivers 190bhp.
BMW hope to achieve consistent top-10 finishes in their first season and aim to compete for the championship by 2012.
The head of BMW's motorcycle division, Hendrik von Kuenheim, said the bike would be ready for the start of next season but he did not anticipate immediate success.
"We naturally realise that we are taking on a great challenge. Particularly the Japanese are some 20 years ahead of us in this class and have lots of experience. But even so, the spirit of this competition alone encourages us in our efforts," he said.
"We are confident that we will be able to start the Superbike World Championship next year with a convincing all-round package, and that our series motorcycle will be just as convincing.
"The Superbike World Championship is becoming increasingly popular among motorcycle riders, since here, unlike the MotoGP, they are able to watch and admire their motorcycles in a direct comparison with competitors."

Bit of a cop-out though isnt it? ok, the boxer engine would struggle even if it was 1200 but they arent even using the paralever after they went to all the trouble of stealing it.
Might aswell stick a yamahonkawasuki sticker on it and be done
