router connection

Ok Geeks and Geekettes
I have a Netgear wireless router.
My PC is connected by cable. All well and good.
The Bosses Laptop is wireless. All well and good.
The Boys PC was wireless. All well and good.
BUT, then the boss decides there might be a risk bombarding the kiddy with wireless waves so wants his PC cabled to the router too.
So I get the cable and plug it in and now the internet connection ether drops out or times out.
Disconnect the cable to his PC and the internet connects straight away.
Any ideas, except from going back to wireless

what security on the roter?
is the wifi card disabled in the kids pc?
can the boys pc see a network at all

and finally - i assume the workgroup name is the same on all pc's?

Its a Wifi dongle and yes it's unplugged. I have a parental control on there. Could that affect it ?

Yes, but times out also when cable connected

after you plug in the cable, did you run the network wizard?

try the following:

turn off security on the router
disable the firewall on the boys pc

then see if it is ok

if so, keep the connection active, then reenable the firewall - see what happens

reboot, and check connection is still ok

finally turn on the router security

if above does not work, uninstall the dongle - REMEMBER to turn off system restore before hand and reboot!

Or plug in the wireless dongle in a USB port at the back of the PC where the Mrs can't see it, lay the cable up to the PC so it looks to be connected (but isn't) and carry on using the wireless jobby.

In day to day life your kid is going to be experiencing a lot more electromagnetic radiation than he gets off the wireless card ....

Hell to pay if you get found out though .....

As far as I can see, the radiated power of a wifi system is less than 1 watt (at about 450mW) controlled by law - and the level of radiation in a house froma wifi set up might typically be the same as his son will experience from ambient TV signals. Or leakage from his mothers microwave. And way less than his kids mobile phone which of course is used next to his head. Father is being neurotic.

If his son turns out dim, its more likely to be hereditary.

P.S. I have a transceiver on my desk next to my non wifi PC. I have to switch the PC off before using the radio because the level of RF interference from a standard PC sends the radio loopy. Switching on the wifi makes no difference. So the lad could be getting way more radiation already from his PC if its anything like mine..

Sorry all, haven't sorted this yet.
Netgear have tried but say it must be a hardware issue and as it's out of warranty tough luck.
I've yet to put the pc's side by side and swap cables around.
