Lost and Found

#1 Post by D-Rider » Sat Jan 19, 2008 1:05 am

Well nicked actually ...... :smt096

Got a call about 9:20 tonight from my lad, Joe. His was out and his scooter had been nicked.

Rang the cops to report it. They rang him to confirm details. Eventually one of them got to where he was .... in passing on the way to somewhere else, was sarcastic to my kid and his mate and swore at them :smt103 and then went off on his more important business (are doughnut shops open at that time of night?).

Anyway I got to Joe soon after and he and his mates had been ringing round everyone they knew for help.
Remarkably one of his mates dads had seen someone pushing a scooter that fitted the description and then we got another call from someone that had seen someone with a scooter of that description a bit further on in the same direction.

Well, with quite a possy assembled we went a searching ..... we scoured a number of very boggy fields and were getting nowhere for a while. Joe and his mates weren't giving up easily and I'm not sure how, but we spotted it lying in a heap at the bottom of a steep muddy embankment just by the river (well it's called a river but there are no real rivers near Cov - more like a brook). We hauled it up and it looks far less damaged than we feared.

Rang the police to tell them we'd found it. They told us they'd recover it to a garage for scenes of crime people to look at. I was wise to that trick - when my car was nicked, we (well the company I work for) had to pay a fortune to get it back from the garage ..... so I told them that, No, they wouldn't be recovering it, the state of the bike would be unlikely to reveal much (based on the fact that they couldn't even get anything from my house or car when that was stolen and the scooter was plastered with mud and crap). Anyway we got it home and locked away ready for a good check over in the morning. Number plate has gone, bits of trim have gone, lock/ignition knackered and who knows what else.
The Police then rang back to say that they do still want to have a look at it - so they'll be coming round tomorrow morning. I hope they're rather embarrassed that there were none of them to be seen out and about tonight - and where they failed to find it myself and a few teenagers succeeded within about three quarters of an hour of looking.

Timing of these things is never good but MOT and tax run out at the end of the month. I was planning to get it MOT'd tomorrow - but now I've got to fix it all up first ... and I haven't much time for doing this at the moment.

So although I'm glad we found it, it's been quite an eventful evening. :smt103

glad you got it back mate

and any clue as to the tealeaf?

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Maybe .... Joe's mates think they have an idea - the way it was dumped make them think that someone at the club they were playing pool at rang the thief to tip them off that we knew the direction it had gone and were coming after it.
They also think this person won't be able to keep his mouth shut from bragging about it either ..... though I can't exactly see him walking into the police station to hand himself in ......

Most police forces have an arrangement with recovery places that charge you (or your insurance company) for recovery and then storage.

No chance of an insurance pay out as Joe is 16 in his first year of riding and anything but Third Party Only insurance cost more than the bike is worth .... sometimes more than 5 times what it is worth - so TPO was a bit of a no-brainer.
That's fair enough - we knew any damage we'd have to pay for - although it's something the thief should be paying for - maybe if we get enough evidence we can try the small claims court .... but I guess we're unlikely to manage that - life's too short....

Pete - did you have some sort of a "kebab" idea when you mentioned the snooker cue?

Sorry to hear about the Bike Andy, Guess you'll be paying a few more visits to Fleabay than you would like.
Sadly we have all got stories of just how efficient the Police are nowadays :smt078

Probably more of a demonstration of the benefits of wearing a lid when nicking a bike?

Waste of time. You might get a judgement but that still doesn't get you the money, and the court bailiffs will only make one attempt so then you'd have to use a debt collecter, and even then... can't get blood out of a stone.
The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.

Thanks everyone.

Scenes of Crime came today ..... and didn't find anything (the guy said he didn't expect to ..... and I was pretty confident they wouldn't).
Begun stripping it down to confirm what needs doing so that I can get it MOTd. Really don't want to have to SORN it for a week just because I ran out of time (and lost most of this weekend to work on it because the police didn't turn up yesterday morning like they said they would).

Anyway, your wise words and encouragement is appreciated (as always)
