Get My Falco Tomorrow !

#1 Post by sidestand » Fri Dec 21, 2007 6:19 pm

Everythings finally sorted, so I I pick me Falco up at 12.30 pm tomorrow
(I have even told the wife I'm getting it - her Christmas prezzie to me ) :smt003

Alarm/immobiliser in the new year though, so I'll have to rough it on the Fazer Thou/TDM/K1200S until then :smt009

That will feel like a very long time...... but it will be worth the wait :smt003

Once you have some miles under your belt I would be interested in a comparison between the Falco and the TDM. Is it a 900 ? Obviously different ergonomics but aren't the TDM engines supposed to have been tuned to ape the characteristics of a V twin? It is a bike I would consider if it feels similar to a Vee ( and my Falco died :smt009 )

The Falco is now in my garage with the others :smt003
Spent some of today giving it a good clean & check over
It needs a new back tyre fairly soon, & the chain is a bit rusty (got a spare scottoiler somewhere, so that can go on in the New year)
Otherwise it looks fine. That red rev limit line goes on a bit early, but thet can be adjusted can't it ?
Weather is a bit crap to give it a good try out, especially with a cold, square rear tyre.

You're right about the TDM's Fausto, mine's a MkII 850, which is the one where they altered the firing from 360 to 270 deg to simulate a big V twin. The 900 is the improved version, with fuel injection & a much improved six speed gearbox.
All TDM's are brilliant to ride & are a very under-estimated bike. The ride & performance are very similar to a BMW R1200GS
but for half the price. Top speed is about 135mph & a lot of riders claim 50mpg, although I reckon 45 is nearer the mark.
Great for all day long two up touring, & I regularly take my young 'un on weekend camping trips on my 850
I'll look a photo out of it if you like

Yes - absolutely - If you get a reset of the clocks it'll reset to 6k - it can be set from that point upwards.
The manual states for a run-in engine, the max revs should be 10.5k - many of us set our warnings just a bit below - say 10k or 10.25k (ish)

A handy set-up guide for the clocks is HERE

It's all in the user manual as well - if you haven't got one, you can download that from the same site or directly from Aprilia HERE

You can also download a workshop manual from Martin Poll's site (the first of these links) .... but it is a BIG download.

Enjoy your new toy :smt003

My sons Falco is set at 11k and I'm sure I read somewhere that others have it up at 12k :smt018

I've checked the book. It is possible to set the warning light at a value between 2000 and 12000 rpm however the maximum recommended rev limits are:

0-625 miles: 6000 rpm
625- 937 miles: 7500 rpm
over 937 miles: 10500 rpm

See p49 of the user manual

I see little point in revving any higher - you'll get more grunt from the next gear in the box.

I'd knock your son's warning light down a bit - no sense in over revving the thing.

Must agree with Andy, it's only the warning light you adjust anyway, the limiter comes in around 11K (??) I believe, so not much point having the warning light set at 12K. Mines also at 10,500, it just gives you a bit of warning before you hit the limiter very soon after.

I never rev mine that high.
My indicator was set for 7000 and peak torque :smt001

I presume this means disconnect the battery and reprogramme?

From memory you press button "C" then press and hold again to increase the needle in 200rpm increments

Who in all the world is looking at their clocks when hitting the rev limiter ???

I don't remember where my light is set but it does occasionally flash under acceleration which I find distracting. So I guess I should set mine to 12K :smt003

I leave my red light at 6k,this equates to 100mph in 6th,so I then have a quiet marker letting me know when I am in real 'lose yer licence" territory.

I have set mine to STOP flashing above 5000 RPM. This reminds me not to under-rev the damn bike... :smt003

Seems a good idea .... but doesn't it drive you mad flashing away getting up there ?

.... and is it actually easier to spot than those big digits that say 100 (or whatever)? - maybe it is because it flashes.

Oh - and welcome by the way

BTW, I set mine at about 10,250 rpm
