OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG and breathe

#1 Post by Myrkk » Wed Dec 19, 2007 10:41 pm

Mr Myrkk has just been offered a job in New Zealand. Wellington. They want him to start the end of March.

I'm bricking it now. I know we started this but I'm now asking myself do we really want to do this? I keep looking at things like the country road on the drive home and how lovely it is, the house we are in and how it is only now starting to feel like home and asking if I can cope with losing the familiarity of the British way of life and countryside etc.

Will we have enough money to live on in NZ, the wages are lower. Will we make friends, will we enjoy our jobs, will we end up wanting to come home

ARGH.

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Rent the house out to friends who you know will take care of it then if you dont like it over there, send the bad lads round and forcibly evict them thus letting you step back into your old life as if you'd never left.

Windy Wellington...hmmmmmmm oh well you can't have everything :smt002

Lets see. Nations hilly capital( plenty of night life, excellent restaurants)set on a very hilly peninsula with a huge natural harbour, the pacific ocean on one side of the hills and tasman sea on t'other. This isn't a city like Manchester, London,or anything here. Nice and green and hilly. You'll probably get a wooden weatherboard house ( they're more resilient during earthquakes :smt048 ) or you could end up in the HUTT (lower or upper) and commute by train into wellington, saves driving over the hills. 3 hr ferry crossing to the beautiful Marlborough sounds and the rest of the south island. short drive over the hills to open countryside. 3hr flight to the beaches of sydney or surfers paradise.
You'll be fine..as long as you support the ALL BLACKS!!!!!

Congrats :smt023

did I mention its hilly :smt017

cheers guys.

FKiwi, we did want Christchurch, Wellie was our second choice but I think I will prefer it from a going out point of view. And as you say, the best of both worlds, chunter around the north island, see where Whale Rider was filmed, go to the glowworm caves or the hot mud pools etc but also a short trip over to south island where we can see glaciers etc.

But, nice scenery and touristy stuff aside, we now have to make the decision if we are willing to risk a familiar [if unpredictable] job market and wages pack, combined with familiar costs of living for the unknown, i.e. WOFs instead of MOTs etc.

Me thinks it will be a busy Yule revising our NZ research to make sure we have it correct. :smt001

Stop worrying about it and do it. If there's a job waiting then you've got half the battle won already.

As for moving overseas, over the past few years I've lived in Germany for 3, visited a fair chunk of the rest of Europe, and spent a lot of time in Western Canada and to be honest, in a few years when there's nothing keeping in this country, I ain't going to be staying here.

Don't get me wrong, I am very proud to be British but unfortunately you're not allowed to do that in Britain anymore because it's not politically correct. And I am sick of living in a country which is falling apart through politics and beaurocracy.

Sorry, got a bit carried away there. Anyway, do it, it makes sense and if you don't you'll regret it later.

Can't really help you on the costs of living. I left ahem mumble mumble years ago, straight from home into the big wide world.

Well done Mr M

Try here for costs of living
http://www.emigratenz.org/cost-of-livin ... aland.HTML
http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert.cgi
Do it!! You'll only regret it if you didnt, besides, if it all goes pearshaped (which I doubt) then you can always return back to UK

I'd go for it if I was you mate - this country gets worse by the day

One word of advice though - don't sell your house straight away if you can avoid it, rent it out for six months or a year.
I've had two sets of friends who've done the 'No Way Back' thing & sold up - gone to NZ & France respectively, then decided that it wasn't for them.
They both found that when they came back, they couldn't afford anywhere near the sort of house they owned before they left, & this has left them quite distressed.
You can rent quite cheaply out there, I'm told.........so give yourself that escape route should you need it :smt002

Just do it!

You did all the research, you KNOW it's what you want!

If you don't like it you can always come back - but give yourself a couple of years. Even if you came back after that you'd never regret having tried it - but I bet you'll regret it if you don't!

My best mate spent 3 months in NZ and loved it so much she'd like to move there but her health and age are against her, you've got the chance, go for it!

I think it's one of those things you have to give a go, and if it doesn't work out you can always come back to blighty,

But if you never go and try it you could always be asking yourself "what if"

My half brother & his wife went to live overseas some time ago, sold his house, packed it all up into the car and left. that was about 12 years ago, and yes it was a bit of a struggle for quite a time, but now he's got his business up and running and seems to be doing pretty well.

If you decide to go ahead good luck :smt002

Based on all of 5 weeks touring NZ . You wont lose the Brit way of life, or to be accurate you will regain the 1950's brit way of life and lose some of the present unpleasantness. Restaurants in the main are Berni 1950s quality - I had the worst curry I have ever had in NZ and when I tried another curry shop because I didnt believe they all could be that bad, I had the 2nd worst curry I have ever had.. The Kiwis are wonderully friendly. They have if anything a worse immigration problem than here because they have become all PC and are busy letting Chinks and Polynesians in by the boat load. Quite a bit of racial tension in the noirth island. Crime is pretty low . Roads outside town are empty but the speed limits mean what they say and speed traps are hidden. Climate much like UK in general but varies a lot from N to South.

In short a lovely place to bring up kids, but a bit more boring than here unless you are a rabid outdoor sports type.

Cost of living is less than the UK.

Go for it. We're riding for a fall here with govt deficits and balance of payment probs. We will be having much higher taxes and interest rates going up as the £ goers down within a couple of years.

Ta for the links Kwak, we're members of that forum already and have posted and answered quite a few questions there. I'd forgotten about the cost of living calcs on there though. We've been doing Woolies shops and making costs lists over the past couple of days, WOF, Drs fees, Food, Heating etc..... I think we've gotten over the initial shock and are feeling more positive now though.

Wellie looks good and cost of living looks manageable.

We're not going with the thought of coming back to the UK but we need to consider the option. Mr M will probably go ovef initially, sort out rental and then a month or so later I'll go over having sold the house and posted erm .........shipped the cats :smt002 posting sounds cheaper hehehe. Mayhaps we will buy a little flat here in the UK to let out so we have the option of moving back to the UK. Our current home isn't suitable as rental and work opportunities are better in England/Scotland than Wales.......
