Starter relay

#1 Post by back_marker » Fri Dec 07, 2007 5:50 pm

Went to start the bike yetserday morning and the bitch let me down - the metallic click of death and no starter motor noise.

Havinbg charged the battery and ahd a good look at it today it seems the starter relay/solenoid is goosed (I know this for 2 reasons: 1. when I stuck a spanner across the bottom of it there was much sparking and the old girl stated first time; and 2. I took it apart to try and see what was wrong so it's definately fooked now.

I had a look at Aprilia Yorkshire's site earlier and it looks like about 45 squid for a genuine spare but this it looks like just a generic solenoid so I am trying so source a normal, non-Aprilia one for reasonable money.

Does anyone either have a spare one knocking about that they would like to flog, or alternatively know of anywhere (preferably in the ANdover/Salisbury/Swindon area) that might do such a thing.

After a little research I believe Ducatis may use a similar unit

IIRC, there's a Yamaha part that is the same, but is a fraction of the price. Have a search on the archived forum, the info should be there somewhere

Yes this is a subject that comes up occasionally - do a search.

If you decide to get an Aprilia item try InMoto - they are often cheaper than the Yorks. site list price.

yep just had same problem, paid £28 for the Yamaha item from my local shop, so no p&p.
yam item is 100 amp, instead of 50, and is a direct replacement, unless like me your alarm is wired into it.
then just a wire to splice into it. worked fine, so cheers for the info.

Couldn't get to abike shop over the weekend so have ordered one off evil bay from Kamikaze scooter company or something like that. Again it's a 100A item so should be better than the original and even if it gives up again it only cost 11 squid delivered so even if I have to buy a Yammy one after that it's still cheaper than the Aprilia part

If that's Scooter Assassins, I've seen their relays mentioned before on various Aprilia forums - not heard of any problems with them.

Woohoo :smt003 it works.

One bum clenching moment when I pressed the starter button for the first time and was greeted by silence... little cherub had been kind enough to press the kill switch for me :smt018
