Age for buying alcohol

#1 Post by BikerGran » Tue Jan 09, 2007 11:42 pm

You know the way the age for cigarette buying is going up - and no-one knew anything about it till it was announced?

Well today in my local supermarket I was told that the age for buying alcohol is going to go up as well! At least in supermarkets, so presumable elsewhere as well. She said that the new rules will mean that they 'can' refuse to sell to anyone who appears to be under 21 and has no ID.

I'm not exactly sure what she meant, neither am I sure that she's got it right, but it seems about right for this government.

If it's enjoyable - STOP PEOPLE FROM ENJOYING IT!
The tragedy of old age is not that one is old, but that one is young.

Well, that'll make a big difference won't it ?!

Half the point when you started drinking was that you weren't really allowed to do it .... so now they plan to extend this period of added thrill !

Trouble is, kids don't start drinking early enough and don't learn to do so responsibly.
When the do, they end up in establishments aimed at late teens/early 20s ie full of other people who never learned to drink responsibly ... with predictable effects.

Most supermarkets already say that if you look under 21 you'll be asked for ID. They will still sell it to anyone who can prove they are over 18 (unless they've got another reason not to, like it looks like you're buying for under-18's), but if you don't look old enough (ie under 21, with no ID), they will refuse to sell. Sounds like what you've been told is their existing policy.
