Ride for Rights 20th October 2007 Wembley—Whitehall
Bikes Go Free! Say No to Road Pricing for Bikes
Fed up with the Government’s plans to charge bikes to use our roads? Act now—it will be law before you know it!
Join the RiderConnect/MCN Ride for Rights 2007 to protest against the Government's plans to allow road pricing schemes across the country to charge for bikes.
What is it?
A well-organised ride for bikes and scooters only through central London, escorted by the Metropolitan Police
Conveying a festival atmosphere but with a strong political message
To develop into an annual event at the same time each year
Why join the Ride?
To call on the Government for a national exemption for bikes in all UK road pricing schemes
To fight the recent call by Transport 2000 and other interest groups to reduce bikes’ power, weight and speed
To make the more general point that bikes are here to stay
To celebrate the positive aspects of motorcycling
To raise funds for motorcycling charities & have a fun day out

All for it! Just worries me that the strong political message will have to be repeated, or develop into an annual event.. Hopefully the underlying message wont be lost and wont have to be repeated! Knowing our government though, it will have to be...

From what I understand of the charge for bikes entering London is that they will have secure parking, ie parking spaces that weill have installed ground anchors and also CCTV watching. For a measly £1.50 a day I think its a good idea.
Beats me why as soon as anyone hears the word charge they go off at it,. bloody stupid IMO.

.... so if it's for parking, why not levy a parking charge - then you'll only be charging those that want to park up in a council provided space - rather than forcing us to pay to use the roads we've already paid for.Gio wrote:From what I understand of the charge for bikes entering London is that they will have secure parking, ie parking spaces that weill have installed ground anchors and also CCTV watching. I think Coventry should introduce road pricing but ONLY for residents of those towns that want us to subsidise them by charging us to enter their towns ... sort of a "reprisal charge".
As for the protest, I'm not against it BUT I do think it rather ironic that we're protesting that we should be exempt from road pricing as bikes are potentially congestion reducing .... yet by meeting in massed numbers to protest in London, the effect of the protest will be increased congestion ... and Mr, Mrs or Miss Mondeo driver will be sitting in their car cursing the fact that they are going to be even later than usual 'cos these F-ing bikes have clogged up the city!
Doh!
I imagine they want all bike riders to use them as it'll cut down on thefts, which has got to be a good thing.D-Rider wrote:.... so if it's for parking, why not levy a parking charge - then you'll only be charging those that want to park up in a council provided space - rather than forcing us to pay to use the roads we've already paid for.Gio wrote:From what I understand of the charge for bikes entering London is that they will have secure parking, ie parking spaces that weill have installed ground anchors and also CCTV watching. so
let me get this straight
as part of our council tax we pay for policing
and that policing ensures that we have safe streets, reduced thefts etc
now along comes Mr Money Grabbing Bastard, so politician, and says that we need to pay again for a service we have already paid for.....
pardon me, but I believe my Bachelors Degree from the university of stating the bloody obvious allows me to point this out.... How exactly does that work then?
how about less time and money spent fannying around on their bleeding desks, and more time actually making a poxy difference would be a sodding good start for most of this pissy little councellors who dream up these ideas between their tea break and secretary shagging lunch time
sorry, just thought i would give a view from middle england :)

I'd agree if people took more care of their property, sadly they don't, so why should I pay for the police to protect somebody elses property when they don't give a shit?Aladinsaneuk wrote:so
