Chain adjuster / swing arm fkd?

#1 Post by HisNibbs » Thu Jul 26, 2007 7:47 pm

The chain adjuster bolt, despite application of WD40 and trying to introduce oil has been getting stiffer & stiffer. Finally tonight it has sheared. I’ve drilled the stub out and had a go with a bolt extractor and guess what that too has sheared, leaving a hardened steel centre that will not be easy to drill out. :smt009

Since I need to get back on the road PDQ, two alternatives short of spark erosion come to mind, the first is Giles chain adjusters the second is to procure one of those surplus to requirement standard swing arms floating about.

I’m not sure I like the look of the Giles adjusters but if they work well and don’t use the existing swing arm hole, I’m interested. Any one had any experience of them?

Any offers on the swing arm? You can have mine to keep that set of standard parts intact.

Have you tried heating the swingarm round the hole?

Steel won't heat up as quickly as alloy so you might get it out

Thanks for the fast response guys.

Pete I'm very grateful for your offer but simply because it would be the easiest solution, first I'm going to investigate the Giles option. As the Giles option is likely to be expensive I will probably look to take you up on yours.

Beccles is a fair distance to manage of an evening and I'm caught up in ferrying my daughters to their holidday destination's this comming week end. One to Wales an the other to York so I'm likely to be a bit driven out come Monday. Possibly one evening latter in the week I can borrow the wife's diesel and make the treck across.

Gio, I think its a bit far gone now for the heat approach. Maybe when I had a bolt or extractor to get hold of, heat would have loosened it all up enough to allow it to turn. Now its just about flush and hardened steel so even if it was pretty loose, I can't apply any tourgue.

I've got a swingarm (with knackered bearings) you could have aswell but i'm even further away :smt001 Could post it but it weighs the same as a sweaty fat lass.

Had a look at the Gilles adjusters on a web site but they don't offer them for the Falco just the RSV.

Can any one confirm if the adjusting mechanism is the same on both swing arms. I.e. are the spindle slider blocks the same size, the distance between the spindle and the butting face of the swing arm similar etc.

Thanks.

I'm 99% sure they are (I hope so as I didn't get any slider blocks with the Mille swinger I'm refurbishing - and I've assumed the Falco ones fit).

Ah, I've just checked on the Aprilia Yorkshire website - they are the same part numbers - so that's sorted that one out!

From memory all the adjustment parts look the same - but I can try to measure it up tonight (unless anyone's already answered by then).

Thought I'd got a clear answer when I searched on AF1 and found a Falco with Gilles chain adjusters .... then I noticed it had a Mille swinger fitted as well ! Doh!

having both a mille swing arm, and a falco swing arm, the adjusters are different 0 the ones in the falco screw into the actual swing arm, the mille has plates that get moved

I have checked over the swing arm, and all seems fine - took me an age to find the chain tensioners though LOL - they are currently soaking in some gunk, prior to being greased and reapplied.

The bearings seem ok - BUT - if you are going to swop things over, I would pop a new set on - about 30 quid all up I think for the full set of six bearings

I have left the linkages and chain guide attached.. and I will clean it LOL

Just say when mate - even if I am not about, my wife is about...
