clunk when braking

#1 Post by SkinnyPinny » Tue Jun 26, 2007 7:29 pm

I have a slight clunk when braking, and it appears to come from the discs,
when you hold them, you can rotate them slightly. repeating the clunk, does this mean they are knacked ?

I thought his was the case, then looked at a mates Ducati and it was the same,
do all of these type of discs have a small amount of rotational movement when used ?

could be the headstock I spose, :smt017

the gold line Brembos on my Laverda rattled like a bag of spanners, these were fully floating tho,

skinny

Simple check; Apply the brakes fully and then try to push the bike forwards. If theres a clunk, (assuming the brakes are fully on), then yes, the steering head bearings, (though possibly front wheel bearings), are prolly shagged.
Just a thought, mind; You could also try loosening the caliper mounting bolts, having a friend apply the brake and then push the bike forward a little and hold it, then you retighten the bolts.
Takes up any play in the bolt holes in the caliper by pushing em forwrds against the bolts.
That just got rid of a recent clunk at my front end! :smt002
Two is the magic number... ;)

It could also be the brake pads moving on the locating pins.

TLoML's Honda suffers from this - the mechanics who did the work chucked on some after-market (brand unknown) brake pads, and the damned things move about 1/4 of an inch back and forth. I'm going to chase up some proper pads (EBC / Goodrich / SBS) as soon as I can.
