What is it about Falcos and flying bugs?

#1 Post by HowardQ » Mon Jun 18, 2007 12:18 pm

Can't imagine why, but my black Falco seems to pick up more bugs than most other bikes, would understand it if it was a yellow one. Before the colour war starts up again, it's supposedly a fact that flying bugs are attracted most to yellow bikes and then othetr bright colours, but not black.
This seems to be born out with visors as I get a lot less bugs on my dark visor than I get on my rainbow iridium version.
Anyway went out yesterday afternoon to Willingham with future son in law on a 2002 R6 in red/white and black and his mate on a brand new R6 in white/red.
When we got back the bug ratio seemed to be totally wrong.
New R6 really bright coloured, hardly any bugs.
2002 R6 again pretty bright coloured, had a few more bugs.
My black Falco, front end totally bloody covered in em.
What's goin on. :smt017 :smt017
Is it just that even bugs find black Falcos attractive.

Perhaps you haven't cleaned her for a while and it smells bad? Are those bugs mainly flies? :smt017 :smt003

Quite simply you ride the faster bike. The bugs have a lot less time to get out the way when they see ya coming.

The BMW GS's are the worst for collecting bugs, when I went to Italy last October by the time I got to Geneva I couldn't see through the screen and by the time I got to Rome there was about 1/2 inch of road kill plastered on the front :smt005

Could be that he travels slow enough for the bugs to catch up. :smt002

That's because they have got aerodynamics of a small shed (with door open).

Lots of interesting answers, think I'll go with Falcoholics, although don't think either of the R6 pilots would agree.
As a matter of interest we were goin pretty quick and swapped around positions quite regularly. Silly thing is it wasn't just a slight difference, my bloody Falco was well covered and the new R6 in particular had hardly any. All three bikes were nice and clean when we set off. :smt017

He does polish it almost every day. :smt007 But then again only had it a few weeks.
Strange really seems to love it almost as much as I love my Falco, then again he is young and impressionable! :smt009
Have to admit though it is a great looking bike, especially in white/red.
Plus it is a very quick 600, if you fancy riding something totally different from the Falco, (well just on the odd occasion when you fancy seeing 16k or whatever on the rev counter).
Me? I'll stick with the Falco on a regular basis with all that luvverly low down grunt. :smt004

Maybe with the falco being 'handbuilt italian exotica' the bugs just want to get close and have a look at the rare beast !!! dont forget R6's and the like are 10 a penny!!!
No shit sherlock

The Falco does have a big frontal area, the screen is one of the biggest I've come across on a bike, that and the rest of a wide flat-ish fairing is a big surface for stuff to stick to, mine gets plastered in flies and other things' guts.
