Looking for a project

#1 Post by Syltiz » Wed Jun 13, 2007 4:53 pm

I am looking to pick up a motorcycle in need of work.. i.e an insurance salvage or something thats just been sitting in someone's garden. I dont have a huge amount of experience - im probably a good step above average-DIY-Joe but would not call myself a mechanic. I do have motivation, time and patience on my side though, and Im keen to learn as I go.

Anyway, Im looking for something I can ultimately put on a track one day as a track bike, maybe a year 1998+ 600 or 750 like this(http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1), or Im looking for something that I can use myself when its done... in this line it would have to be different to the Falco, i.e. a naked or a trailie, like this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... &rd=1&rd=1) or this (http://www.hbc.co.uk/cgi-bin/zyview/D=v ... /R=3247582) - just as examples.

I wont always be able to view the machine, how "safe" is it buying a cat C or D motorcycle? Can there still be frame damage to cat c/d? (The 1200GS seems to have a bent frame and the engine would need to be rebuilt - is this a no-no?) Can anyone recommend other websites/places to see such motorcycles? Or any other advice on such a project?

Thanks in advance.[/url]

A cat D will not have frame damage although a detatchable subframe is not classed as the frame so can be damaged. Cat D&C are just uneconomic repairs and can go back on the road, Cat B has to be broken for spares and Cat A goes in the crusher(allegedly) I'm doing a cat D GSXR750K5 which was mainly panel damage and tank but also needed a new subframe, along with a couple of the usual bits like bars footrests etc. MAKE SURE THAT THE BIKE HAS NO FINANCE OWING ON IT, an HPI check will reveal it's insurance status and also it's finance status. Be careful though as unless you know what you're looking at you can end up with something that needs a lot more money spending than you bargained for.
