lights / leds for dark/clear lenses

#1 Post by Aladinsaneuk » Thu Jun 07, 2007 3:57 pm

have had a quick look, and as i am going to be receiving a new shiny dark rear lens in the next week or so....

EXACTLY how do most people change the lights over?

a link to a suitable post would be great :)

Are you fitting an LED board aka Nooj's lights or just changing the bulbs?

would like to assess both - in terms of fettling fun and bitch of a job'ness

initially something quick that just works, with a possible view to changing stuff come the winter

The first thing you have to do is change the bulbs to red bulbs that would allow you to use the clear or smoked lens.

You can upgrade to LED bulbs it is pretty easy just pull out your 1157 (type of bulb) and put in an 1157 LED.

On top of that you can buy a motorcycle specific tail light integrator, that will incorperate the turn signals into the left and right brake lights. I've seen them for anywhere between $50-$150. But you can buy one for a trailor that will do the same thing at just about any auto parts store for $5-$10.

Then from there you go custom LED or something nobody has thought of yet. Basically the possibilities are almost endless.

I've ordered the 360 degree stop and tail jobs from here.

Not cheap at 25 beer vouchers for a pair but if they work I reckon they'll be the mutts dangly bits.

Had a quick look at these and they look like single action bulbs. In other words NOT tail light/Brake bulbs.

I still haven't got round to getting LEDS for mine yet :smt009

Where I got mine from, (and EEEPs n GregUKs), but they are cheaper now! :smt013
:smt003
Oh just noticed; They are actually a tad more expensive than when I got some; That price is EACH, (I paid about £9 per pair as I recall). :smt001

Cheers FM. I ordered some at the slightly more expensive price.

Am I the last to fit his/her new lens? Next w/e probably.

Anyone prepared to give a detailed walkthrough of this operation? I feel sure it will be far more fiddly than just undoing a couple of bolts - especially as my alarm is mounted right up there in front of the bulb access thingie.

Yup, nothing is ever as simple as it should be.

IIRC You'll need to take of the rear plastic and the grab rail then undo the screws holding the two halves of the plastic surround together. pop the bulb holders out and remove the light pod and then 3 screw to take the back off the lens then refit. You'll need to be careful removing the rubber pads, they'll probably tear the bottom adhesive off, but a bit of double sisded tape will do the trick to hold them in place when you reassemble.
