Alternative Falco side stands
I'll be posting the photos shown here on Facebook as well, but wanted to post here first a) to give forum members first dibs on any stand they might require and b) to ensure that the data doesn't get lost. FB is great for short term stuff, quick answers etc., but lousy as an information storage and retrieval medium.
Anyway - during the course of my Falco ownership I've tried 3 different side stands (4 if you count the poxy original). First was a Suzuki GSXR1000 stand of indeterminate vintage that required quite a bit of fettling to fit, but did a fine job. It was only when I started to really jack up the rear ride height that I started to look for a longer alternative.
The longer alternative came in the form of a side stand off a Honda CBR1100XX (more commonly known as a Blackbird). This was much simpler to make fit, only requiring the drilling of a differently-placed hole for the side stand switch pin to fit inside, and works very well if you've gone to town on rear ride height (I have).
The other one was a Honda Fireblade 04-07 stand, which I believe Griff has sold shed loads of. I had the Blue Falco at the time and was also planning a trip to the USA, so I availed myself of cheap USA pricing to get one. In the end I went for a Blackbird stand on the Blue Falco, as that too had substantially increased ride height.
Anyway, here's a 'Usual Suspects' shot of the three stands in question:
They are from L-R - Blackbird, Fireplace, GSXR Thou. The extra stand length of the BB item can clearly be seen. No stands and only 3 cable ties were harmed in the course of this shot.
Next up is a side-on view of the mounting points and switch pin holes. Same order as before:
Lastly, a close up of the hole that needs to be drilled in the BB stand. The new hole is the one at 4 o'clock (and a bit) and is a 4mm hole.
If anyone wants any one of these it's £40 including postage.

PS I have 3 spare Blackbird side stands, 2 of which are 1.5 and 2 inches longer than original for when I change my suspension, might still be a bit short if I go as high as my old Blackbird.

I can vouch for the BB stand being a really good fit on the stock bracket, easy to fit, 25 mins work including drilling a new hole for the switch pin ( with a hand drill ).
The BB stand is the perfect partner for an Ohlins unit with the height jacked up

I'm sure I bought a stand from an Ebay seller that to me now appears almost exactly the same as the Fireplace stand.
I have no complaints actually, ideal for my setup and I appreciate the longer pin for booting the stand down.

Another vote for the blackbird stand, didn't even have to drill a new hole, just snapped off the 'prong' on the swithch with pliers, installed it and did the bolt up tight.
Yeah I know you all frown on the gheto approach to modding things and the correct way is lalala.
It works, not touched it in 4+ years, why make things more difficult.
Fix it, ride it, enjoy it.
Think it took all of 10 mins.
Go figure.

I've tried a couple over the years - a blackbird and and gixxer stand I think.
I'm back on standard now, having had the bike fall over to the right hand side on the alternative stands. Never had a fall on the standard stand, despite it being the stand I've used for 80% of the time I've had the bike.
The alternative stands are just too upright for my liking.
I know I'm probably 1/100 that prefers the standard stand.....maybe it's my rideheight or something....

I've got the ride height on an RSV Mille Ohlins shock running on Falco linkages (shocke re-valved to suit) dialled up to at least three-quarters of available adjustment, plus I'm running a 180/60 rear tyre which further increase rear ride height.Gio wrote:How high have you got it?mangocrazy wrote:The BB stand will definitely be too tall for a standard shock, and may also be too tall for modestly increased ride height. On the subject of ride-height .... well, strictly speaking, steering angle, I went down a ring on the forks (which was all the high-bar conversion would let me have) and the difference in steering is very obvious, although having higher and wider bars will have made its own difference too.. It's much more willing to turn, and I'm tempted to lift the back a bit on the shock adjuster too.
I am still struggling though, with a very harsh ride from both ends and suspect I have more experimentation to do with settings.
