Sad news - John Surtees has died.

And the above link once again shows how little motorcycle racing figures in mainstream news, as it's listed under Formula 1, despite him being 4 times 500cc WC before moving to F1. But I cannot see that particular achievement (WC of the pinnacle of 2 and 4 wheeled motorsport) ever being equalled.

And from everything I've ever seen or heard of JS, he was a true gent, as well as an accomplished designer, mechanic and team owner.

They don't make 'em like that anymore...

Always sad to hear that one of the pioneers has 'timed out'.
I guess that he had a fair old innings considering the amount of racing he did wearing those hideous 'corky' helmets !

Apparently a true gent - he'll be missed. Funny I only ever knew of him as a motorcycle racer till a few years ago!

The documentary about Surtees that Paul Hollywood did was shown again tonight on BBC4.
Probably on i-player for a week or 2 if you missed it.
Ah no .... just checked .... unavailable episode - sorry
