I was really surprised as most people who've met him say he's a really nice bloke, gone right down in my estimation too!

Yep he shouldn't have done it but I'd cut him a bit of slack if he doesn't become a repeat offender.
At least he did remain civil.

My thoughts exactly. He apologised and wasn't exactly rude. Better to park there than in a disabled/elderly/pushchair space.
