Handguards

Ok, I had bought a pair of handguards for the Shiver but never got round to fitting them so, thought I, how about fitting them to the Falco?

So, this morning, went out to the garage fully equipped with tools and the info from the workshop manual.

5mm allen key to take bar end off? Check

Remove locking pin and rubber grommet? Check

Remove 24mm lock nut? Check

Remove sticky out bit? Um, no

Couldn't work out how to get this out, it's not in the manual and most searches brought up the information 'I changed the bar ends' and was, therefore, useless!

Eventually found a thread over on AF1 which had the eminently practical advice to grip hold of the centre pin, pull and 'wiggle the shit out of it' until it comes out. Success!

Handguards now fitted :)

They are the cheapo Acerbis copies from China (about £30) so flex easily where they touch the fuse box on full lock but have just been for a ride and it doesn't interfere at all. The only time I'm aware of them is manoeuvring to park but it's trouble free.

The good news is, it means I can hold off buying heated grips as they make a hell of a difference :smt003

I've always been a bit meh about heated grips as in my experience it's the back of your hands and fingers that suffer most with the cold. You get this curious 'baked Alaska' type thing going on where the palms of your hands are roasting and the backs are freezing.

I delayed buying handlebar guards for ages based on the looks thing but couldn't believe how much they improved the cold weather riding experience until I bought and fitted some.

The only downside (apart from the aformentioned looks thing)? The ribbing I got from my mates about putting my hands in muffs... But you neatly side-stepped that by calling them guards. Good work.

These days I don't bother riding when it's cold enough to need that stuff, so I guess that makes me a bona-fide wuss.

Those look like a really good copy - a mate is after some but wont pay the full cost the Acerbis - even though I did...

I realise now that everyone else is talking about an entirely different item to me. These are things I festooned my old VFR750 with for the 90 mile round trip to work in the early '90s...

Interesting, I'm liking this idea, might prevent some of the wind chill during the winter.

By sticky out bit, do you mean part 4 in this diagram?

Not really but I've only done short trips so far, 20-30 miles.
Mind you, I've only just got the bike so it was good time to change them before I'd notice the difference! :smt004

Looks bit like the ones they fit to the GS1200, but they had heated grips as well.

Hisnibs.....Keith came up with an idea that doesn't look out of place for the falco.

Hopefully he will see this post and add a picture for all to see.
