Aaaaargh !

#1 Post by fatboy » Tue Oct 25, 2016 5:44 pm

My laptop has been burning data on my wifi faster than a hoodie wearing dude burns weed.
EE tech support told me where my data is going, a background app called octech is streaming files, they dont know how to stop it, I cant find it/stop it.
Microsoft support are equally useless, Acer support are even worse.
Not very good for a brand new product.I get no product support from the supplier because I bought it online, thanks Curry's/PC world

Depending on your comfort and the version of is presuming it's windows bring up the task manager and look for a process with that name highlight it and end tge process and see what stops working or whether it restarts automatically

Find the file or any file with tgat name and see what folder it is in as tgat may give you a clue whether that is the program name or not

If it is and I doubt it try remiving it vis tge control panel programs and features option
If you find tge file also right click on it and look at tge properties it may give you a clue what it is

If you don't want to remove whatever tge program is rename tge file with that name (possibly octech.executive? ) just add .old to tge filename if it's legit you can always remove it and rename it back

Wouldn't be surprised if it is some sort of connectivity for the curry's knowhow people
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.

What Geoff said. Search the registry for Octech and post the results up here. (Command prompt, regedit.exe). Also check Control Panel => Programs => Uninstall a program to see if it's listed there (probably won't be).

Might also be worth downloading the free verion of Spybot Search and Detroy, as that may be able to winkle it out.

Thanx for all the info...
Yes Windoze 10, no, no named file/app/prog so cant disable using task manager ect.
Have contacted seller, reminded them that device is a few months old and still under warranty so get your finger out or give me a refund, awaits response.
Few morals to this tale, online sales are cheaper than retail sales ( from the same seller) because if you bought it retail they will wipe your ass, if you bought it online they will post you some sandpaper.Maybe

If you've got task manager open, make sure it's showing 'more details'.

Click the Performance tab and at the bottom of the window click 'Open Resource Monitor'

In the resource monitor, click the Network tab and see if there's a process sending / receiving large quantities of data.

Thanks, just tried all that, not showing anything new like OCTech guzzling data like a Falco guzzles fuel.
Reply from seller asking how I would like to proceed with this?
I said 'sort it or have it back.'

No I have a Lenovo which is in the cupboard, it likes bluescreening more than it likes running.
This current dung pile is an Acer Aspire, its just crap, slow, jerky, constantly altering settings on its own...crap crap crap.
Its going back to the supplier and I will have to pay a bit more for something that actually works.
This one replaces the first one which I bought as brand new but damaged packaging, was in fact a returned item, I soon found out why it was returned.
This is piss poor for a device which is only 3 months old

If the acer is going back dig the lenovo out and check the model number
Whilst you have it out go into safe mode (f8 key on windows boot )
Find tge device manager in control panel and look for any warning triangles
Also if it is older check that the fan is expelling hot air and try to think about how you use it they don't like running hot ...despite being called laptops it's actually not a great way to use them
If you are stuck and can get it up and running we can always try to set up a remote session
May not fix it but can try

Other things with lenovo is to use the hidden partition or discs that came with them to reset to factory and then add back drivers
Their Bluetooth drivers can cobflict with the network cards too

Yep, them's the ones. That is where the data is going.
Just got a pop up from 'driver restore' telling me 6 drivers need updating, this is another thing that I have not requested or installed but it is running.
The blurb says it's a Micro$oft/Acer prog.
Mmm? Why is it here when I didn't ask for it?
Leave me alone, I prefer Lego or Meccano.

May be obvious but for most of tge above to work you will need to make sure you have show hidden files option in folder view

If you're comfortable with configuring a firewall (not the crappy Microsoft one), then that can be used to block any incoming or outgoing traffic that you don't want. I've used Zone Alarm for years - they're annoying with their suggestions to update to the paid for version, but the free version does a good job. It allows you to put it into 'learn' mode where it asks you whether to allow different traffic types through the firewall. In the case of OC Tech, you could specify that all transmissions inbound and outbound are blocked.

That should stop the little fecker...
