Lovely day ... and I'm grounded!

#1 Post by D-Rider » Sun Jun 03, 2007 9:16 pm

After the dreadful weather we've been having it's been a cracking weekend.

Knew my insuance was up soon but had been holding off renewing in the hope of searching for a better quote. No worries I though - I'm sure it runs out the middle of next week - so I'll search at the weekend.
Anyway, checked the documents at about 12:30pm on Saturday and found it ran out at midnight on Friday. No problem, I'll forget the better quote and renew straight away.
Pick up the phone, ring, recorded message .... we'll be happy to discuss your requirements during office hours ......

ARSE!

I know, only myself to blame but a weekend with decent weather and I'm grounded!!

Bugger that, I never accept the renewal quote without making calls...and lots of them. Managed to get my premium down to £134 fully comp, protected, with Hastings Direct. Funny thing was that i was with them already and their renewal came in at £170...but their online was £134...its a no-brainer :smt001

You should use one of the online companies. I use ebike, I can insure and add any bike to my policy or I could take out a new policy and have it start in the next 5 mins.

How old are you and how many no claims do you have?

Yeah - I know .... but not sure if that's the best thing at present.

I'm insured through Footman James on a Classic Bike policy for my CB400F with the Falco as a second bike.
When I bought the Falco I'd not ridden for a while and had no no-claims - so this worked out the cheap option (all above board - the insurers know the CB400 is off the road at the moment).
So with this policy, both bikes are covered and I get full breakdown cover included as well (hey, if I trailer the CB400 somewhere, I wonder whether the policy will mean they have to get it back to being a runner for me :smt002 ).
Both bikes are covered fully comp - the 400 with a £50 excess and the Falco with a £250 excess. Premium is £352.

Anyway, the downside is they don't give no claims on this policy - but now with 2 claim free years under my belt, I guess I may do better elsewhere ... but then I do need to factor in breakdown cover costs and the value of insuring my non-running CB400.

So trying to compare like-for-like when I'm thinking of insuring a bit differently is not so easy.
Also, I'm not that confident on the "modifiications" sections of the online quotes - it's easier to tell someone what you've done to the bike and get them to decide how it's recorded.

You get free breakdown cover with ebike and can have up to four bikes on one policy. You can also have up to four riders on the policy but the downside to this is all the bikes have to be in the policy holders name.

As for the mods. The insurer has got them on the website and you choose the nearest one to your mod. There is a loophole in there somewhere. They are not clear so you cannot be clear. Ebike dont do buisness over the phone so use it to your advantage.

Just done an ebike quote - £382 for the Falco alone .... not as good as my renewal.

Started doing the Hastings quote but amongst the details on the first screen it says that for an online quote:
The bike is the manufacturer's original specification with no modifications that enhance appearance or performance
.... so that must exclude virtually every Falco on the street!

It also says:
Cover is only available in the UK, excluding Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man
.... now although I've no immediate plans to go to the Island or the Continent, I don't want to be stuck with an insurance that doesn't cover me there.

Maybe I'll ring them to see what they can do though.

I've just had my renewal through from Carole Nash, and I'm rather impressed - under £300 fully comp for a 29 y/o with a town post code and 4 years NCB. Haven't tried anywhere else yet, but might be worth a go for you D-R?

Just signed up with MCE (Got my son's scooter insured through them too).

£226 fully comp including legal and breakdown, £350 excess.
This is for the Falco alone.

BTW, I'm 50 with 2yrs NCD living in Coventry.

Nope! No way!

I've definitely seen a bigger number than that on the wee screen when you press the "B" button.

Try Devitt insurance, but ring them, as their online service does not cover all their policies.
Got mine for £115 Fully Comp with £200 excess, then covered the wife and myself for breakdown, for the car and bike, plus as a passenger in or on any other vehicle for £64, with Green flag.
But I am on the wrong side of 50, with full no claims, and an advanced observer.
