New road sign regs could open up a whole can of worms

#1 Post by T.C. » Mon Apr 25, 2016 1:41 pm

Some of you may be aware that from the 22nd of April, new powers came into force regarding the placing and usage of road signs.

Whilst some of the new rules are actualy quite sensible, there are one or two which I think are going to open up a whole can of worms, escpecially for example where it is no longer required to have repeater signs on restricted roads. I can see a lot of people being caught out by this one in particular.

It is going to be an interesting few couple of years ahead as decisions, convictions and accident liability cases are decided on the back of these new rules

Couldn't agree more. Near where I live is a road where one stretch is 40 and the other 30. We know each is different but nobody seemed to know where the different stretches started.
I eventually spotted the sign at the start of the changed limit - hidden away behind a "clump" of traffic lights. What's more it was pretty faded.

Now I know we are supposed to spot everything but sometimes they don't exactly make it easy for us. In situations like this, with no repeaters what chance do we have?

Now before anyone tells me that 30mph areas currently don't have repeater signs, I know - that's not my point - just pointing out that this will exacerbate the current issues of poor placement of signs when you enter a different speed restriction.

As for clearing some of the road clutter and out of date signage - yes please - bring it on.

This would be fine, if it wasn't necessary to stare at the road surface trying to figure out a path between potholes and stupidly place manhole covers, as if it were a live minefield.

I can see the sense in some of this..
Now you can accuse me of being cynical, this gives Local Authorities the opportunity to both save and make money.
Bath City recently had to refund a shit load of fines after admitting a lot of new signage was misleading and actually led the unwary directly into a camera controlled 'bus gate'
