First ride with 15t front sprockect

#1 Post by fatboy » Sat Apr 16, 2016 5:58 pm

I am totally shocked at the difference, dropping down one tooth has unleashed hidden potential !
Now riding on my fave stretch of ' disused airfield' Im about 10 or 15 mph faster, now at the mid triple figures stil with on gear left to go !
And the bike sailed through the mot today so I'm feeling just a bit smug :smt003
So I'm in Sams bar if anyone wants to join me for a slurp

The sprocket is on my to do list when mine wears out, too old to be worth doing it until then.

Congrats on the MOT.
Mine went through last week with just a word about the run out on the disks, but can't even feel it at the lever mate. Third one that day apparently. Can't be that their brake testing gear is no footling good then can it...

Do it now - the older you are, the less time you have available to enjoy it !

I found the biggest benefit was on those tightish "stuck between 1st and 2nd gear" corners and roundabouts.

The only time I switch back to the 16 tooth is if I'm off long distance touring which is going to involve a lot of motorway riding.

Disc run out ? I feel a juddering on the lever when Im almost stoppped, down to 10 mph to standstill, no mention from Mr Tester.
as your sprockets come up for renewal, the 15t is money well spent, you will like.
As Wayno says the 16t is better suited to distances, one of each type is good housekeeping :smt002

What does he use to test them? My normal bloke still uses an old Salter brake tester but he buggered off on holiday while I was trying to make the bike go.

One of these new fangled whizz bang brake tester things failed a colleague's GS that only had 1200 on the clock. Don't trust 'em.

My tester man uses a lot of old fashioned reliable stuff, you may have heard of some of these,
Does it look fucked ?
Its not brand new so I dont expect it to be perfect.
You buy your tyres here, I know you look after your bike.
We both know you cant take the piss with a bike like this.!
You know I will never let anyone ride a deathtrap home.
I know you have the sense to remedy any niggles I discover.
No new fangled nonsense to give a duff reading, he's always busy and always willbe cos he's bloody sound

That's the sort of bloke you want. Couple of years ago I watched my usual bloke MOT a CG125 for a youngster. He spent 15 minutes going over it and the other 15 minutes on the MOT clock showing him how to adjust the chain and lube the cables.
He's been there going on 50 years and mostly does Brit or vintage stuff but like you say he's always busy.

Similar here. I was introduced to him by Willopotomus.
You turn up and the first thing is he makes you a cuppa.
Then gets on with the MOT - adopting a sensible approach. I'm sure he'd never let through anything dangerous - and I think for those he's known for some time, he realises we'd not bring anything that shouldn't get through.
As I always say, get to know your MOT tester - he'll gain confidence in you and not give you a hard time over things that don't matter.

I doubt VOSA will be kicking the arse of my one - he's sound.
That is unless they've banned them from giving you a cuppa and chatting with them about bikes.

If I took something up there that should fail, I'm sure it would but I wouldn't get a failure based on an overzealous misinterpretation of the rules.
