Urgent - Q re insurance for my late brother's house

#1 Post by BikerGran » Wed Feb 03, 2016 8:58 pm

Does anyone have any idea what to do about insuring my late brother's house?

The existing insurance company want about £700, this includes cover for valuables and cash etc - just as if the house was still lived in!

It's going on the market shortly but there is still some stuff in there, and of course we need the house itself covered in case of anything happening to it - but we intend to put it on the market very soon and hope that it will sell quickly!

My instinct is to cancel the current insurance but what do we do then? If we put it in the hands of an estate agent we will give them keys as we both live elsewhere - do they cover it?

You don't say how big the place is etc. but that seems way too much for an average or even pretty large house with typical contents. Maybe there is a premium for it being unoccupied but I don't remember anything exceptional being proposed insurance wise when my parents moved into care and we proceeded to clear and then sell their house.

If you have an exclusive contract with your estate agent I suggest you check whether it is covered while in their custody and if not get another couple of quotes.

Agree with the above bit also look at the unoccupied clause it will probably say 40 days or something so just take it in turns at staying one weekend every so often then it is not unoccupied for longer than that period.
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock

Yes we thought it was far too much but my brother was paying too much anyway - he was quite canny in some ways but not in others.
just take it in turns at staying one ... at period.

We have to visit once a week which my sister has been doing as she's nearer than me.

The insurance company will charge more for an unoccupied house because its a much bigger risk - kids, vandalism, fire etc. No the agent wont cover the insurance unless you ask him to do so and pay for it. He has no insurable interest anyway since he doesnt own the house.

Your best course is to insure it because of the risk but to shop around first.

I hate it when people ask if you have a bathroom, I want to say "No we pee in the garden"
