Who deals with the admin on here nowadays? IE, new members and preventing spammers from joining?
Another forum I belong to (also on php) is having trouble with spammers so I said I'd ask what measures have been taken on here as they seem to work!
Maybe someone could PM me? Pretty please!

Hi Bobby - with Tim taking a bit of a back seat at the moment, it's mainly me and Pete.
Pete does most of the approvals, I do a bit of tidying up.
I put the thing in place that seems to have thwarted the spam bots. Clearly a human with mal intent could still get through but it's worked well.
Best way to see how it works is to sign out of the forum and go through the registration process (preferably without completing re-registration). All will become much more clear than me trying to explain it.
Cheers

You can't always tell that easily but by checking IP addresses from whence they have come you can often get a good idea.
TBH I think that most of the attacks come from bots as our not-so-newfangled method sorted it out at a stroke.
If an individual gets through, you'll soon know and then it's just a case of banning them.
You really can't put things in place to automatically stop individuals as you want people to be able to join. Just as you can't tell a terrorist by their appearance, generally speaking you can't automatically tell a human spammer from a good new member - though the incidence of human spammers appears to be very low.
