New tank arrived from the USA so ready to get started.

As per the title. Just had the customs demand for money before they release the hostaged fuel tank from their greedy hideaway.

So it should be with me for tomorrow I hope. As long as they call me back to take payment that is..

Now is the time I guess to take names and look at who is happy with the planned tank without the drain and through breather. I can still fit the Mocal breather if anyone wanted which would get in the way of using a tank bag. But if you do not use the fitted tank cover you would be OK.

Please let me or Andy know what you want to do. I will be taking the tank up to the mould maker as soon as I have numbers and confirmed deposits so the mould can be paid for with order and he can just get on with it.. It would be about 3 weeks from the moment he is paid and has the tank for him to have the mould made. ( Although I would allow an extra week or so for any post processing on my part before I can make the first tank)

If Andy want to start a new thread just for those who have ordered I am fine with that I like my facebook page I would keep an running update going of work being done if I can while the mould is being made. Once I have the mould then there will be updates as I progress and sadly a lot of repeated photos of each tank being made so that person can see their own tank being made in real time....

So please start adding names and lets get some carbon out of the freezer and into the oven... :smt003

Can I ask, I've kind of lost the thread a bit as to what we are getting. Can we confirm a few of the key details please? From my understanding:
  • Cost - £800
    No breather pipes/race cap to be used. Is this part of the cost? Or extra, group buy, source individually? Personally I'd be keen to keep a lock, but not if this needed a different key so would go with a proper race cap if this is the case
    Fuel pump will need to be swapped over from existing tank, along with the external fixing brackets
    ???
Pretty happy with all proposed, just want to make sure I'm not missing something important and everyone can see a definitive "this is the score"

OK you get the carbon fuel tank which will accept all the OEM parts like filler cap (it does have a breather in there its just ducted to the bottom of the recess) So you can, as I said, use the original one if you want or buy ANY Aprilia compatible replacement filler cap. The base will accept the OEM fuel pump and all of the original fittings like brackets and the pivot mount on the back edge of the tank too. A Mocal breather can be fitted if you ask for it.. No extra cost as I usually have them here anyway. So all you need is to swap over what you have onto the tank I supply. The only thing you will not have to do is attach the two drain pipes on the bottom of the tank. As I said I have used my OEM filler cap on my kits and fuel tanks it is just I do use the Mocal breather as the RS250 breather in the cap is a complex design and seems prone to blockages even at the best of times.

The fuel tank will be supplied either lacquered (gloss or matt although matt does add £40 due to the high cost of the matt lacquer) or ready to paint. If you want a tinted lacquer to match a bike or try to match the bike I can give you details of who to use for that and the cost of that is dependent on them.

The whole idea is to copy the OEM one as closely as possible and not make changes which need you do use anything that will not work on an OEM tank. So no weird bespoke fuel fillers or odd fuel pumps etc. It can use every OEM part and work as a straight swap if you wanted.

Need definite names first then when we have a minimum of 7 names it going to be deposit time.. First come first served so to speak...

Yes, we've found a good use for a yellow tank .... as a former for a mould to make tanks of an acceptable colour ....

I like the yellow bikes; they wouldn't be my first choice, but definitely not my last either.

4.8 kg, eh? That's quite a lump, as you say. What weight would you estimate the CF tank will come out at? And would you advise replacing the heat-reflective sheet on the underside on our shiny new CF tanks, or is it surplus to requirements? Judging by the state of mine on the blue bike, I would need to find a sheet of aftermarket equivalent and fabricate a new one, if required.

Richard reckons the carbon ones will come out at about 1.8Kg .... so that's 3Kg I don't have to shed from myself :smt002

I've had a long chat with Richard today and plan to post things up tonight.
..... time to start holding those jumble sales to get our deposits together ASAP ....

As for the "heat reflective sheet", Aprilia lists it as a "F.Tank acoustic insul. Panel"
If all it does is cut the noise, I reckon we can live without it. TBH I can't see that there is much heat of a type that can be reflected as there is a dirty great airbox in between the engine and the tank.

That suits me fine. Something else I could quite happily jettison.
