New tyres and suspension set up

#1 Post by squadron Nero » Thu Aug 14, 2014 3:28 pm

After killing off my front tyre last Saturday and not being a massive fan of the BT021s I thought I'd kill the rear with a few burnouts :smt003 and get some new boots.

I went for the Pirelli Angel GTs. I haven't had a chance to scrub them in yet as it started pissing down so I just came home to sulk. Maybe I'm biased maybe it's because I had squared off the old ones, whatever, they felt better from the off. I'll tell all after Sunday when they get a workout around north Wales.

Once I'd had the tyres fitted I shot across to see a man who knows a lot more than me about suspension. I was weighed and the bike setup for me. I only got a couple of miles under my belt before the rain but it definitely felt more planted under acceleration and more stable under braking. But the rain stopped play so I've got a bit more riding to do to see if it needs fine tuning. The chap who set her up is called Mark. He learned his stuff helping out a few privateer teams at the TT and used to work in the motor sport industry. He's now an ambulance paramedic and does this to raise money for the air ambulance service. So if anybody wants there bike setting up I'll give you his contact details. He supplies a data sheet with all your settings and explains exactly what he is doing and how it will effect the handling of the bike and he'll show you how to do it yourself so you can have a play / fine tune if you want / need to.

I just need a big dollop of sunshine now.

He asked for a £10 donation to the AA. I gave £20. Took about an hour. Usual price round here for setting up is between £60 - £100

He did my ride height / front racesag, compression and rebound and worked out that if I should replace the fork springs the best rate for me would be 0.95Kg/mm
On the rear he set the height / racesag and rebound .There is no compression adjustment on the standard Sachs unit.

I was weighed (in full riding gear) and I was on and off the bike while he made small adjustments to get it spot on.

Just fall off your bike and if you injure yourself badly enough, he'll come to you :smt002
