tyre deflection
Erm. Is this normal to be running that far over?

How long was that? Tyre pressure should be checked once a week.
The less air in the tyre, the more contact patch it has with the ground, and the easier it will be to deform the tyre and go into the sidewall.
Sidewalls are not designed to be in contact with the ground. The rubber there is very, very thin.

I think that try pressure has been mentioned before ;) and that the garage will put (if they bother) what the manufacturer says but that most run different pressures. I run 36 and it suits me. That said I have run it nearly flat after it has been stood DOH!
I think Blinkey sometimes runs a lot more but that is when he is transporting another bike in bits on the back :)

For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock

Presumably that's a 180/55 on the standard 6" rim? Unless the tyre pressures are way, way off, I don't believe that mark was caused by tyre deflection. Far mor likely to be something rubbing in that area.
Having said that, something still looks wrong about that picture. There is no change of angle (or very little) from the tread to the side wall. There should be more than a 90 degree angle between tyre tread and sidewall, but yours seem closer to 180 degrees in that pic. Could you take a photo from a different angle?

The line looks like it has too clean of an edge for it to be deflection. I'd check for something rubbing, might only occur while the suspension is under load so maybe get someone to sit on it while you check. If you can't find anything. I'd take it back to your supplier and ask questions / reject it if you can as a defective unit.
