Stock Metzelers

#1 Post by sabestian » Fri May 18, 2007 8:36 am

I just changed my stockers (not due to wear, more because everyone kept on raging how bad they are). Well I had been thinking - lots of people use them, they can't be THAT bad, right? Wrong.

It's the best and most obvious performance/safety mod I've ever done (and I fighterized my Falco, chopped the airbox, fitted PC3, yellow Mille shock etc). If you sum up all the previous mods, the tyre change alone gives you 200% extra. Easily. Yellow spring shock - yes, there was a difference. Noticeable. like 20%. :smt005

Today was my first ride on Contis Road Attack and f@ckn hell what a difference! I thought I'd fall over on any turn! The turn in is so neutral and quick - it's just stunnung.

If this is a sport-touring tyre designed for long distances (compromised on grip and profile), then on the other side are tyres like Pilot Powers CT2, Diablo Corsa III etc., where do those Metzelers fit?

In the bin, I say. AMEN and HALLELUYAH! :smt004

Yes .... it can't be stressed enough.

Why Aprilia should put out the bike on such aweful rubber - failing to show it in it's best light - I really can't fathom. How many more would they have sold if people had a better experience on their test ride?

Like you, I changed my shock before changing the tyres and the difference of the shock didn't seem so huge.
The only way to understand what a real difference that makes is to go back to the blue springer for a bit and then refit the better shock. I had to do that due to my little problem with my linkages coming undone. Now I'm back to the Ohlins, I can appreciate the difference the shock makes is also very significant ..... it was just masked by those bl@@dy aweful tyres when I first changed it.

First 2 changes on the Falco should be:

* Tyres
* Sidestand

We can then argue about what comes next .....

I guess it depends which Metz it comes with. My first falco had MeZ3s on and I hated them and switched as soon as poss to Conti Road Attacks - Luvly :smt001 :smt001 :smt001 .

This Falco came with Metz Me1 Sportecs..... Well I'm just back from Cadwelll (more of that later) and I have to say they were ace. I've run my previous bikes (gixers) on MeZ1 Race and these Sportecs were easily as good.

I put a new rear Sportec on at 3200 miles just to keep the match but when this ones sh***d I will going for Contis again.

I don't know anything about Metzelers or stock Falco tyres but read in MCN (so it must be true :smt009 ) that there is a huge difference between OEM tyres and the same ones we buy aftermarket. In other words - whilst you may not like the tyres it came with you may find the aftermarket ones of the same type much better. Then again you may not :smt003

Of course not many people are going to try another of a tyre they hated :smt018
