Caveat Emptor

#1 Post by KitchenSync » Thu Jul 03, 2014 10:53 am

So... off to Mr.Griff heads my superduper big valve engined compressor (only running on the front cylinder).

Currently... the top-dollar pristine 10,000m engine turns out to be a big-valve bottom end with small valve heads bolted together using non-standard fixings and mole-grips.

I exaggerate for comedic effect, but only slightly. Inside I'm weeping.

Someone in the supply chain; owner, Race Base in Belfast, guy that stripped the bike and sold on the engine, has been willfully ignorant or fibbed to. I don't doubt the guy I bought it from but regardless it's now my problem!

It may well be time to part ways with the old dear but I've not decided yet.

My one hope is that the guy INSISTS the engine was running perfectly - so this swapped head thing may be a misdirection, but Griff's checked pretty much everything else.

It's currently sat in Tamworth waiting for me to decide;

Stick or twist.

Crud!

What a complete bunch of arse !
You've been sold a sick pup.
Does Griff think its worth trying to redeem? is it viable to redeem and do you have any source of redress with whoever sold you that turd of a mis-described engine ?
Good luck fella, this has tested you to beyond most peeps limits

There's a long supply chain for this engine - and the trail is long cold. I don't doubt the guy is genuine - we've been discussing it today - whether the (bankrupt) dealership he got it from knew is another matter. Whoever sold it to them MUST have known the top end had blown up.

But it was ridden and sounded ok before breaking - and from the outside it looks bona-fide. If that's the case then the fact the engine is NOT what I paid top dollar for (£460 with shipping) is irrelevant - because something else is stopping it from running.

I'm not sure if it's worth saving. Griff needs to earn a living and needs more time to investigate as everything obvious checks out. I can't keep throwing money at it though just to find out what's not wrong.

I think it's probably time to cut my losses and hang up my helmet for a while.

It'd make a nice project for Sherlock Holmes.

Is this the replacement engine you bought?

Yup - I got it around Feb but didn't have a place to fit it until recently

Damn, that is really bad! Can you not use the current engine as a donor?

Nope - I ditched the original engine - I had nowhere to keep it and was moving flat.

They think the generator has spun on the crank. It's had a sprag replaced at some time and possibly there's been no loctite used.

I may have one last delve. It'll only take a few hours to find out but I can't afford to cover Griff's time to find out. If that is it and there's no damage then maybe it's not a total write-off.
