Engine Idle Adjuster Frozen

#1 Post by FalcoPete » Sun May 18, 2014 9:59 pm

Wonder if anybody can help with this one please. My Falco has been outside for 15 months, although under cover, but have noticed that when I try to turn the idle adjuster the cable just flexes probably from being corroded.

Any ideas on how to free the mechanism up? I'm assuming the tank will need to be lifted to do it and I am also suffering from the tank swelling problem as it no longer can be lifted without removing the back mountings too - what a pain.

Thanks in advance folks.

You will have to lift the tank..... Sorry to say...
WD40 is the solution. :smt002

Thanks for the idea - tried that this morning and, unfortunately, no joy. Looks like there is a very small alloy connection to the cable below the airbox that might take my small adj spanner. Wondering if I move that back & forth whether that might be the resolution?

Disconnect from the clip and elevate it - wd inside the cable

Pray

Had the same problem a few weeks ago, happy to report it was resolved with a little prodding, probing and penetrating oil, small screwdriver, coffee, roll ups and patience
Dont force the issue, you may break small plastic bits !

For jobs like that, I'd always recommend PlusGas over WD40. PlusGas is a penetrating fluid; WD40 (as the name implies) is a Water Displacing fluid.

I agree that penetrating oil would be better than WD40, but some lubricant is better than none, personally I prefer a spray silicone lube.

Just be careful of the curved metal tube at the throttle body end of the cable, I've snapped one in the past with very little force.

I had the same thing on mine, I lifted the tank, unclipped it from the frame so it was in a straight line and having applied a liberal amount of WD40 each day for two days before I got a small pair of pliers on the squared end of the adjuster near the throttle bodies and gently twisted it free.

Cheers guys will try that over the weekend whilst fitting the heated grips, new longer braided lines (handlebar above the yoke) and if time permits, a c/f belly pan.

Appreciate all your input :smt002
