Turns out that it's a job that a complete numpty like me can do, so I decided to make a quick visual guide.

Thanks Stoney. Nice vid. I think I need to invest in a Gabro chip. It's a while since I spent any money on my baby.

Personally I think the Gabro chip is the best solution chip wise

Another amusing vid from Stoney...
BUT it must be said YOU SHOULD NOT handle an eprom by its pins with your bare hands, the grease and acids present on your dabs will cause problems in the future.
Im sure D_Rider can expand on this, I know only what I have read, He knows shit loads of stuff

Not to forget static electricity, either. That can kill ECUs and chips faster than you can blink.

Not watched the vid yet (sorry) but yes, keep your fingers off the pins. Biggest problem is static that can kill the internals. Maybe not straight away but it can weaken them and they fail later.

Note: I only say "can" not "will" but whatever, keep fingers away from pins - and discharge yourself first (no Squid - not like that)

I'll try to watch the vid later.

Gabro seems to vary his price - mine was €100, I've heard that others got theirs for €75.
Maybe maps for different configs come in at different prices.
Tell him what you want and he'll do you a chip to suit.

He lives in Rome BTW - so Pete can't have one as he wants to quit the EU

Yes that's fine - use a whole bag of chips if the chip shop can spare them.

You could even stick them up your nose for that Fish Called Wanda effect

Many years ago I worked as a repair tech in a computer shop. If we ever got an intermittently failing component (usually a system board that would work when it was cold and then randomly play up when it got warm) we would put it in the work bench, make a few "scuff our shoes into the carpet" circuits of the workshop and then touch the component.

We managed a 100% kill rate, and sparks up to 6" long. I think we once estimated we were generating 40,000 volts (at some stupidly tiny amount of micro-amps current though).

TL;DR - Yes, static will kill electronics. Been there, done that.

I installed my gabro wearing vinyl gloves, and touched the pins because I dropped the bloody thing and bent a few pins, so will the gloves be an effective anti static barrier ?
