Restricted?

#1 Post by spiderwheels » Tue Feb 18, 2014 10:52 pm

I apologise for letting the side down but rather embarrassingly (on a private road somewhere..) in a 3rd gear roll-on from 30mph against a tatty old 1995 ZX-6 ridden by someone 4 stone heavier both bikes were even.

I thought only the US bikes were restricted. Mine is definitely UK, it says so on the sticker..

Maybe 3rd on the Falco is significantly taller than the ZX (yes I know it is anyway as the ZX revs to 14K..)

I believe that all bikes came from the factory with restrictor plates fitted in the airbox (I know mine did), but they are easily removed. Once this is done, one of the wires from the ECU needs to be snipped (I think), but someone will be along shortly with more precise info, I'm sure.

First thing to check is whether the restrictor plate (located under the air filter in the airbox) is still present or not.

If it has been derestricted, perhaps you should think about getting a 15T front sprocket. That will make 3rd gear (and all the rest) a lot more responsive... :smt003

Thanks. I will have a look in the airbox. Where is the ECU?

I've had it weeks now and not even lifted the tank or taken any bodywork off.. I'm getting so lazy in my old age..

ECU is under the seat - between rider and pillion seats. It's got a rubber cover on top of it.

My mate had a Z636. That and the falco were evenly matched :smt002

The 636 has the same power as the falco, but is significantly lighter. In a low speed, low rev roll on the torque should boost the falco through, but in a normal drag race unless the rider of the 636 is much heavier than you they should have the slight edge. Against a 95 ZX6R you should be able to take them, all depends on their revs at the time, and the reaction time of the rider, and the skill of the rider to get the gear shifts just right.

I wouldn't worry too much, as long as the bike makes YOU grin, who cares who's fastest.

I'm not worried who's is fastest - just need to make sure mine isn't restricted. Riding around on a restricted bike is sure to wipe anyone's grin off their face!

Indeed all Falcos came restricted. Most were derestricted at PDI or first service but some slipped through.
Different markets had different levels of restriction (different sized restrictor plates)

A guide to derestriction is on Ken's site: http://home.comcast.net/~sl_mille/derestrict.html

There's no restrictor plate and the ECU wire has been snipped. The air filter did look a bit filthy.

I'll put it down to user error :)
