Swingarm pivot pin and torque settings

#1 Post by Fausto » Fri May 11, 2007 5:16 pm

I have just refitted my (standard) swingarm and was a bit confused by the part descriptions and torque settings given in the Aprilia manual.

Image

There are 3 parts to tighten - 5, 6 and 13.
The manual says.....

Rear fork pin driving nut torque: 60 Nm
Rear fork pin metal ring driving torque: 60 Nm
Rear fork adjusting bush driving torque: 12 Nm

Yet the 'General Information' fastening elements torque chart says.....

Fork pin metal ring: 12 Nm
Fork pin lock ring: 60 Nm
Fork pin nut: 90 Nm

Anyone want a go at matching up the descriptions to the diagram ? :smt009

Come along,.,., at least 50% of us have changed our swingarms and probably most of the rest will have had a fiddle so someone must have an opinion

unless I'm being a total pratt and missing the obvious :smt009 but I'm happy to be told !!

Well possibly but it can only be 'torqued' by inserting the swingarm pin and then you are limited by the manuals instruction....

NOTE the adjuster ring (3) must not stick out from the inside edge of the frame. I think (3) refers to 5 on the pic.

In other words it is still a loose fit when all the other bolts are tightened ??

Well in the absence of any advice to the contrary - this is what I did:-

Firstly fitted adjusting bush (part 5) to frame making sure it was flush with the inside face of the frame.

Next positioned swingarm and fitted pivot pin (bolt no.2) - push fit only.

Fitted Washer and nut (13 and 17) loosely to end of pin.

Torqued up pin which is now driving the bush to 12 Nm.

Torqued up lock ring (no.6) to 60 Nm.

Finally torqued nut (no.13) to 60 Nm.

My uncertainty in all this derived from the vaguely conflicting part descriptions in different parts of the manual and the conflicting torque settings quoted for the fork pin nut - 60 or 90 Nm ??

Still suprised that no one has had anything to say about this (Aladinsane excepted) :smt017

possibly because those that have done this, have done it by feel, not torque setting??

hi paul

if you go grab the pdf workshop manual, post if you do not already have that link btw, and scroll down to page 7 - 76 - 00 you will see a list of what the torque settings should be.

reading that I think that you need to take the rear fork pin nut up to 90, not just 60

from what you posted the rest are all correct

That would definately include me, even now I have a torque wrench I rarely use it. I guess all those years in engineering did pay off eventually.

Sorry I couldn't help M8, to be honest I couldn't remember how it had gone back together, it's about 3 yrs ago since I did the swap

Yes I found that page and agree it says 90 Nm - that was one of my main beefs. In the step by step guide it says 60Nm.

Anyway - it's done now. Somewhere between the 2 I guess.

I'm also from the 'do it by feel' brigade. Thats why I have to borrow a torquewrench :smt001 but I do have two 3lb club hammers and a manchester spanner in my garage.
