Nokia Lumia... any good ?

#1 Post by fatboy » Tue Sep 24, 2013 5:25 pm

Just been offered one on a really good deal, 100 mins cross network, 250 meg, unlimited texts, £13 month or 200 mins £17 a month.
Im currently paying £22.50 for 200 mins, unlimited texts.
My phone data usage would be the odd email so I think 250 meg would do

Do you need a new phone? The Lumia runs Windows Phone 8 which I haven't heard great things about from friends but I haven't used it myself. I think the app store is a bit lacking.

There are also a few different models, do you know which version it is?

You could get a better deal going SIM free on a rolling monthly contract.

The wife has the Limia 820 and I've got the 920. The WP8 operating system takes a little getting used to, but is really easy to use. Some of the features are a little annoying, but there are ways around it. The 'live tiles' are pretty cool. You can customise where things are, size and what to see too. I've heard people go on about the lack of 'apps' but I've not found that to be the case. Everything I've wanted, I've found, or found a version of that'll do the same job.

The camera (on the 920) is pretty good. Not as good as the newer Lumia's, but way better than android options on the market IMO. A big selling point for me was the camera. If you take a look at the pictures in the 6T Resto bit in the workshop area, the last couple of months worth were taken with the 920.

Also, being Nokia, it's pretty much bullet proof. I've dropped mine a few times and thought the worst. Dusted it off, and it works fine. Couple of scuffs, but the screen etc is fine. The 820 is a little more flimsy as I've had to replace wifeys screen a couple of times. (bloody lummox!)

Would I have one again? If you asked me before I got used to it, I'd say no. But now I've learnt to make the best of it, it's a definite yes.

If you can stump up the initial costs the following has to be the way to go:

Buy a Nexus 4 from the Google Play store. The phone is not locked to any network and is a pretty top-spec Android phone (I've had one for a while and it's marvelous - with a completely clean version of Android without any service-provider bloat-ware on there)
As they are preparing to introduce the Nexus5, they've slashed the prices of the 4 .... just £159 for the 8GB version and £199 for the 16GB one.

Then either go to GiffGaff for your calls or the new OVIVO service.
With OVIVO Freedom plan each month you get 150minutes, 250texts and 500MB of data for FREE. OVIVO to OVIVO is free of course.
You just pay £20 one off fee for your SIM of which £15 is stuck back on as credit! The service is supported by advertising and you get the odd advert email from them. So far it doesn't seem too obtrusive. The one off cost has gone up in the past week - until Wednesday (when I signed up) it was just £15. My SIM arrived today so not used it yet

I've still got Giffgaff on another phone as that is excellent too .... but not as good as free .....

They have been unavailable for over a week or so now, think the 8Gb sold out last month. Obviously not going to be restocked as the N5 is out soon.

Try eBay, but get the 16Gb version. 8Gb isn't enough as you lose 2Gb to the system.

I had a 16Gb but it isn't waterproof nor is the external pocket on my jacket :smt012 but I agree they are brilliant. Was rooted and with a custom ROM.

I will be buying the N5 when it is out :smt001

Thanks D-R, Will and Jonnie. Ovivo has certainly attracted my interest !
The offer was on Jodaphone, which apparently is pants round here.
Cost is an issue, so will trawl the phone shops at the w/end and play them off against each other.
Best option may be to buy a sim free handset and go Ovivo !
