I tend to ride my bike - it has built in charging facilities that tend to keep the battery charged.

(when I go away I do use an optimate as I do have power in my garage but if I didn't and I was gong away for a long time, I'd do what the owners manual suggests and disconnect the battery.
If I was going away for a very, very long time, I'd pull the battery out and charge it indoors)

Well alarms are not standard so probably different alarms do different things.

It's a good point though - pulling power from the alarm and running down its own battery is something that I'd not really considered.

My lad had the same dilemma and he rigged up a little solar pack (from Maplins I think). Seemed to do the trick well enough to keep the battery topped up. If your search the usual places I think you'll find something.

I use a solar trickle charger, does the job, £10 from Maplins.
Got a bit pissed off with removing seat to connnect/disconnect croc clips every day so used ring connectors, but charger leads are ultra thin and too easy to break being kak handed when separating the battery leads from charger.
In my case its solar charge or no charge so I stopped being kak handed !

I'm in the same boat mate. I just use the bike often so it doesn't ever go near flat. I've always meant to fit a kill switch for the battery.... even have the switch and wire.... just never done it....
