Speedo Reading Zero

#1 Post by DavShill » Sun Sep 01, 2013 6:44 pm

Been out for a quick blast this evening and the speedo is reading zero, and no mileage clocking up. Presume the sensor has croaked - Mille version on ebay nearly £100 :smt103.
Anyone got a spare they are willing to part with?

For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.

I can turn my lack of ability to a service if you need to legitimately crash for cash though as I don't have to try it just happens

There is a thread somewhere on the net about using an alternative sensor (but there seem to be none available in the UK). I ordered one which turned up a month and a half later, but by that time I have parted with £75 for a new aprilia one.

I shall be making a new holder for the cheap sensor and wiring it up sometime this month and then keeping it as a spare. If it works ok I'll let you all know and that may save everone a few quid.

Yes I've been thinking for some time that many bikes use the same type of sensor and that the main differences are probably the length of them and the relative position of the mounting lug and the sensor wire (plus maybe the connector - which is no bigie)
I was thinking that an adapter may well be possible - just a case of finding the cheapest and most widely available compatible sensor and then getting the adapters made up.

I'm just finishing up my mounting adaptor then just need to change the plug and it's hot to trot.

The sensors are only 5 quid each and if this works all I'll have to do in the future is unscrew the sensor and screw in a new one, job done, that'll save £80 a time.

I'll keep you all informed

I have read that some people had problems with the dished heads causing problems so I'll have to give it a try with standard flat topped bolts, the sensor can be wound in and out to adjust the gap so should clear anything.

I have just been speaking to an electrician and he said to pick up on non magnetic heads I'd need a capacitive sensor but these are about £80 a pop so won't be swapping to stainless bolts :(
