Hi, can anyone advise whether or not the light above the number plate is a legal requirement. I only ask as mine has stopped working and since i now have a tail tidy fitted i was about to buy a new smaller number plate and remove the light completely so that I can get the plate higher on the tidy.
Just remembered my bike is a Falco, tidy purchased from Wayno

A light is a legal requirement. A smaller number plate is a £60 on the spot fine.

Tolerance will be our undoing.

I'm not sure of this but Pete maintains that a light is not a legal requirement but if one is fitted it must work.
Safest thing is to make sure you have one and that it works.

Not a legal requirement (mot wise)
But
If fitted must work
A reflector is a legal requirement for mot

I did not have a problem when I had no plate light
Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

You would be in trouble riding in the dark without your regitration illumimated. There are some very discreet LED's out there for £15/20 ish, even some with in built indicators.
By discreet I mean around the size of a 20p coin
Small numberplate means INSTANT PULL !
Choose wisely

I decided to look further and found another uk law anomaly....
You do not need one for an mot but you cannot fail an mot without one but would get an advisory
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001 ... 561_en.pdf says you DO need one between sunset and sunrise....

As I've said on more than one occasion, requirements for MOT do not necessarily confirm the legal requirements for the condition or use of the vehicle.
Construction and use regs etc need to be considered too

Stick led number plate bolts on it and stick the reflector where the number plate light used to be.
Where ever I lay my hat.....

Standard size is 9x6 so 7x5 may be pushing your luck, 8x5 is only half an inch off each long side without looking like its taking the piss big time

Mine's a 8 x 3 :)
Browny, get a couple of birght white LEDs and screw them through the underside of the plastic (from the inside of the rear seat compartment). This will give you as much light as a small LED number plate light and be completely invisible to the naked eye (apart from the magic glow of course). Then you can stuff the number plate right up to the top.
You will just need to worry about waterproofing them.
