bike keeps turning over
went to start the bike earlier and it kept turing over after i'd taken my finger off the button.
Even with the ignition turned off it kept going.
eventually it stopped and now it just wurrs when pressed so the battery is flat and is now on charge for the afternoon.
will this have killed my sprag? i hope to god not.
What on earth could cause this? Starter solenoid perhaps?

Starter Relay contacts have probably welded themselves together. Unless it's something like Pete has suggested, it's new relay time (and in the meantime disconnect your battery or it'll discharge it beyond recovery).

I have one of these.

It took about 2 working days to turn up.

I had the exact same symptoms 3 weeks ago.....
The relay stops with ignition off, sticking button carries on with ignition off
You would also have generated an EFI error over 3500 revs...

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...
Yes it's a possibility Pete, but I've had exactly the same symptoms from a welded starter relay. There are a few things that can lead to this.
Welded relay contacts will not care whether ignition is on or off - just keep going till the battery can give no more.

That's a completely different fault with it PeteAladinsaneuk wrote:nod andy
when my solenoid went - way back in the mists of time, it would not start or turn over at all till it was shorted....
either way - you have an answer zoid :)

Sorry, but I've looked at the wiring diagram, a shorting relay will continue with ignition on or off, as it feeds directly from the battery. Sticking starter button is fed by switched 12V, so would stop when ignition is turned off.Aladinsaneuk wrote:I had the exact same symptoms 3 weeks ago.....

i have no idea about how to read a wiring diagram but
I know what happened
i had been working on the bike and made the fatal mistake of washing it
following day I started riding to mallory. I have an efi error and immediately thought of the sensor in the right snorkel (engine was fine till 3500 revs and then stuttered - top speed of 68 mph)
stopped, applied wd40 etc and carried on
nope, still there
next i thought of an intermittent problem i had with the right side switch gear - i had replaced the switch but - just in case.. I stopped and stripped the switch down and reassembled - doing it up as tight as i had before
when to restart and no efi fault showing when ignition on BUT - started the bike and there it was. confused i turned the ignition off - the bike continued to fire / start....
having fast release pins i popped the saddle off and removed a battery terminal - end of problem.
checked everything again - and reassembled the battery etc - started bike and carried on trip thinking what the hell was wrong... arrived at keiths and asked for a hair dryer as by this time i was convinced the efi fault was down to the air sensor.....
turned the bike off and it carried on running and firing ... and then i noticed the starter switch sticking... slackened off and end of problem....
now I am very aware that my falco is one of the very early ones, and somethings are different from the manual but, i can be 100% certain that it was trying to start / run with the ignition off....
