sprag clutch...help please!
In the process of replacing the sprag clutch at the mo but not getting on with the method described by blinkey, ie; using a shifter to hold the magneto flywheel whilst undoing the M16 bolt that holds it in place. Unfortunately i have no idea how to go about locking the clutch and can find no reference in the manuals so could do with some help please. Having to get a gasket for the clutch cover will not be a bind if it means i can get the job done.

Have you not got bungs fitted to the bike? Why don't you use a trolley jack to press against?
Make sure you have some body support the bike.
If you notice in my picture I used an allen key socket and a knuckle bar to get the leverage.
The spanner in the centre does not sit in square and needs to be a very snug fit

Tolerance will be our undoing.

Afraid no bungs on the bike and although i got the shifter well supported and using an allen socket and knuckle bar the shifter slipped of once already and left a small scratch and a slight crease on the mag flywheel. these are very small blemishes but i'm at the stage where i fear i could end up doing real, expensive damage.

Ok, just had another read of the engine manual and found what i'm looking for but can it be done without draining the coolant and removing pumps etc. ie remove the diaphragm cover, assembly and clutch plates/springs? is there an alternative to the special blocking tool?

If you're trying to loosen the big bolt holding the flywheel on: here's how I did it:
Put the bike in sixth gear, to maximize the counter torque the crankshaft will give. Put in your allen wrench, and give it gentle taps with a hammer in the direction you want it to turn. These taps will loosen the bolt, before the crankshaft has a chance to turn with the bolt. If this still doesn't work (it should, was rather easy this way), have a mate hold the rear brake down.
Hope you figure it out.
Word of wisdom: use an original gasket for the sidecover, I thought I could get away with liquid gasket from loctite, but that just didn't give enough clearance, rendering the starter-gears seized. Cost me a new starter and battery...

I'll give that a try thanks, i had it in first gear as well as the spanner arrangement on the flywheel hub, thought that a lower gear would offer most resisitance because if you wanted to turn the motor over, for instance when bump starting it, you'd choose third gear.
