Blackbird stand

#1 Post by szrdave » Sat May 11, 2013 7:49 am

I'd heard mention the Blackbird side stand can be fitted to the Falco, and as they can be picked up for less than a tenner I decided to give it a try.

Mine is from one of the later FI bikes, but apparently the earlier carbed version is the same. Fitting involved a little dremel work, and took about half an hour from start to finish.

Steps to fit:

1 - Flattened out raised sections on Falco frame where stand bracket fits, obvious when you look at it

2 - Re-profiled top of Blackbird stand bracket slightly to suit frame

3 - Ovalled one mounting hole in the stand bracket, as the hole pitch is 1-2mm wider than the Falco stand

4 - Removed a bit of material from the stand stop in the retracted position to give extra ground clearance when the stand is up

I'm pretty happy with the result, the bike is now very stable when on the side stand and can be parked on slopes/rough ground without instantly trying to topple over!

The only down side is the foot of the stand sits a bit further out when in the 'up' position, and if riding on track I'd probably want to re-fit the original just in case it touched down.

think i will give this a try to mine, the stands are cheap enough to give it a go and not worry if it works or not although im sure it will after reading this post

do you know what the year of the blackbird was your stand came off ??

thanks for the info BTW :smt003

Not sure what year it was from, it was advertised as for an injected 'bird.

One other point to note, I don't currently have a side stand switch fitted. The mounting method is the same, but I don't know if the hole for the switch 'peg' is in the same position.

I'll chuck a picture up tomorrow, so you can see how the bike sits.

From the rear, the bike leans over a bit more than with the stock stand and the foot of the stand is set further out, so it's more stable in both directions:

When retracted the stand sits in front of the 'dent' in the link pipe, reducing ground clearance. It could come up further with a little more grinding.

Looks like I need to clean the bottom of the frame, the footrest and gear linkage!

Good work!

I will move over to the tech section in a few days

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

Looks very similar to the VTR stand I have, both the stand itself and the lean angle.

Hmm - still seems to touch the ground a bit close to the centre line of the bike.

..... and isn't a blackbird stand a bit too fast for a falco?

Agreed. I found my VTR stand actually bent after a few trips of being strapped down to a ferry, hence why I swapped to the more solid GSXR stand.

A small update:

That's right, it's a Falco loaded up with tank bag, tail pack, tent, sleeping bag etc on a steep downwards-and-to-the-left slope. And it's still standing up :smt017 :smt003
