Goodbye Dad

#1 Post by D-Rider » Fri Apr 05, 2013 9:50 am

My Dad died this morning.
He'd had several strokes in recent years and really could no longer communicate - but until this last problem was still very mobile.

A couple of months ago he fell down stairs in the night and ended up in hospital - not a great place for him as he had a genuine phobia for them that left him shaking - even when visiting.

They were ready to discharge him after a very short period but delays in sorting out a care package and then ward closure due to norovirus meant he was trapped for weeks - so I've speant a lot of time driving back and forth to Reading. After that he steadily deteriorated - I think not least in part to being trapped in a place he couldn't cope with.

He died about 6am this morning. I missed being there at the end but my sister and niece were with him.

Many happy memories. He loved nothing more than working on motorbikes, cars and aircraft - that's where I learned my skills.
He was also a champion bodger - but sometimes took that too far when it would really have been better to renew but his aversion to spend money (something learned from his dad and passed to his sons) meant the bodge usually won.

I will miss him.

Please raise a glass to his memory - I should really offer you his home made wine ..... but I won't (that was always a bit hit & miss)

my thoughts are with you - i know we spoke about your dad a few times

if i can help at all, please just give me a call - Hanna sends her love

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock

Here's to your Dad!

To reiterate my comment on Farcebook, my thoughts and condolences are with you and yours. I shall duly raise a glass or three later on t'nite and toast the old feller. Having only met him through your anecdotes, the world is one less on the side of the good guys.

RIP Andy's Dad. At least the greats now have someone up there to spanner/bodge their bikes for them! :smt003

Very sorry to hear this Andy; even though you're expecting it, it doesn't make it any easier when the time comes. As others have said - remember the good times, of which I am sure there were many.

When my dad was in hospital and close to death, one of the nurses said 'just remember; your Dad lives on in you'. And it's true.

And my Dad's name was Ray, as well...
