Tyre seating....

#1 Post by Cathcart » Sat Mar 23, 2013 10:44 am

Hey, having a right pain trying to get this tyre to seat properly... Got the good old washing up liquid on it and tried using a mates compressor but it just won't catch enough to get a good amount of air in...
So... Through a tad of net searching I'm thinking about the body spray option. Anyone tried this or know of another way?

Not aware of this one ..... is the idea that you spray yourself up so that the tyre becomes so attracted by your beautifully fragranced body that it immediately cooperates like a bevy of beautiful babes in a Lynx advert ?

You push down your tyre, spray some in and light it... Quickly hits the bead. Some folk use lighter fluid etc but that may burn a while...

You can buy proper tyre soap.

Fookin spiders?.... :smt017

Not sure how proper tyre soap is going to help with getting air in...

Well, you learn something every day... never would have thought of that. To be honest I've found that as long as I have access to a compressor when trying to seat the bead, it all works fine.

I suspect that sir may have got a little over-enthusiastic when fitting the aforesaid tyre and bent the poor thing out of shape. The other thing I try and do is fit the tyre in a warm room. Doing it in a freezing cold garage or shed means the rubber is stiff and doesn't exhibit any 'give'. I try to warm tyres up before fitting them by sticking them next to a radiator for half an hour or so (normally when SWMBO isn't around). Helps quite a bit.

My garage is proper freezing, doesn't even get sun. The tyres live in there and I'll bet that was the problem. When I mount them I only go little by little with the levers.
Was fun using the spray though, no nonsense approach!

Yes, sounds like a cold tyre is what caused it. Sorry to suggest your tyre fitting technique was anything less than immaculate... :smt003

I'll remember the Lynx effect for future reference. Can't see them making an advert out of it, though...

My fitting skills probably aint the best either but I am super tight fisted.... I'm not paying someone to do something I can do myself. People don't like getting their hands dirty these days. Damn those young 'uns...

I'm with you - I fit all my own bike tyres. You know the job's done right and save money into the bargain.

I've never tried that technique myself but it's commonly used by offroaders who operate with low tyre pressures and can easily unseat a tyre.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7FIvAw2wC4

I was told by a bike cop that swarfega, washing up liquid ect takes many many days to dry so best avoided, but I have used it in the past without problems
