Short oil filter

#1 Post by wayofthedarkhand » Tue Mar 05, 2013 2:15 pm

I need one of these. I'm told halfords stock them. What do I need to ask for?

I'm presuming if I waltz in and start talking about an Aprilia Falco they'll think I've gone mad.

Aprilia 2004 SL 1000 Falco K&N Performance Oil Filter KN-152

I got mine from demontweeks direct via e-bay for £10.52 worked a treat.

Well I'm told halfords sell them for £6 so that seems like the best option.

The KN-152 is the bit that has to match, that is the K&N part number, if you get it for £6 that's really good.

Champion x312 £7.49 (or similar).

Now I just need oil (used to buy HG's 10/40w for £20) and an oil drain tank (through my old out).

What internal changes to the engine were there between models that allow the newer models to run fully synthetic?

Personally, I'd go with 15/50 semi (unless you've been using 10/40 without any problems: Caused clutch slip for me) Silkolene Fuchs.
As far as I'm aware there were no internal engine changes other than the oil filter case getting longer.

I saw a memo from Aprilia to there dealers in was it Germany/Sweden saying that 10/40 should be used in colder climates.

Personally I couldn't care less. I just was the cheapest oil possible that going to last until the next scheduled service.

Well, I guess parts of Germany and Sweden would count for a generally colder climate than here in the UK. :smt002

Some of us believe there was a change around 2001 - bikes from 2002/3 run full synth oil with no problems. The earlier bikes IN THE MAIN need semi synth or the clutches slip

I am not aware of any clutch slipping with 10/40 - indeed aprilia issued a directive to dealers to use 10/40 IF clutch slip was reported with 15/50

I use semi synth 10/40.... And yes I do buy a quality one :)

We do get a discount with opies oils

I did run on Fuchs 15/50, then changed to Castrol 10/40 Magnatec ( or some silly name)
Conclusion...
now find neutral first time every time, but think I hear a bit more mechanical noise

I thought Magnatec was car oil?

Apparently it can be a bit risky putting that in a bike with a wet clutch as the added friction modifiers can cause clutch slip

I've always used castrol power 1 in previous bikes and I'll use the same in the falco...

I always use the Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic Racing 4T 15/50w. I have had the bike 2 years in spring and have had no problems. I have an 05 model although made in 03. I see no one ever mentions this oil, is there future probs if I continue to use?
