The granting of the HMRC to speed could be lethal After all, they won't have any blues and two's on board (being on covert operations) Imagine a ford mondeo speeding through a red light and hitting some poor old girl out to do her shopping That's the whole point of the lights and sirens to warn other road users....

Methinks that would cause a whole heap of problems, imagine if they hit someone and sped off as they are chasing a guy who hasn't paid a bill or has dodgy cigarettes onboard! What do you put on your claim form and more importantly, would that exempt them from stopping at an accident?

Very good point. the right to exceed the speed limit is often abused by the Police
HMRC have over stepped thier mark confiscating ' booze cruise' hauls, Ive known of them to blockade drivers that had bought duty free tobacco from a car boot sale, Im not convinced they need even more license to be the 'uberlaw'

We've all seen the blues put their blues and twos on to get through red lights just to turn them off at the other side. Granted, if I were a cop there's a chance that on occassion I'd do the same. I know this is abusing the right which should be somehow monitored and justified... How do we monitor or justify hmrc doing it? Why do they need to?
They are revenue and customs....
Im maybe wrong due to alcohol consumption but I doubt it...

I'm sure the HMRC lot would only take advantage in genuine emergency situations like our friendly plod.
For example a few years ago a nice South Yorkshire plod was let off after going through a camera well over the limit, because he was rushing to an urgent call.
The Magistrates obviously let him off, even though he did not have Blues and Twos on.
Then shortly after a member of Joe public who had a shop at Wickersley with a security camera next to the local take away supplied the local press with footage of said plod leaving the take away with multple bags of nosh in his hands, minutes after the camera caught him.
Bang to rights and the bench were not too pleased either.
Very sad because I suppose there were many starving plod on his watch, who could have had hunger pangs if he had not driven so quickly.

As has been said already, no way should this be granted for unmarked surveillance cars.

How can you do a proper surveillance if you've got to give up if the target exceeds the speed limit or you get caught out by a traffic light?

Police assistance,they very often work hand in hand even though HMRC have greater powers of entry than plod,they dont have 'I can do what I want ' blue lights but have greater resources than plod.
My mum was a VAT re assesor,claiming back over paid VAT for self employed,occaisonaly when persueing a rebate, HMRC would present her with incredible detailed evidence of VAT fraud,more intricate than plod could ever afford

If it's specially drafted in ex police traffic cops doing the driving then no problems. Ive followed them doing training thru cambs and their high speed pursuit in unmarked cars is awesome. So refined and fluid as they carve thru traffic like a surgical scalpel thru skin. But random ex squaddie oik working for HMRC trying to follow suspects? Jeeezus No. Thats akin to letting me loose with explosives...

I've been in the passenger seat with traffic cop doing that - awesome doesn't begin to describe it!
