Gambling

#1 Post by Gio » Tue Nov 27, 2012 6:48 pm

Ok this thread really got me thinking https://www.ridersite.com/viewtopic.ph ... highlight=

I think a lot of the problems people have with gambling is that there's far to many adverts on the box pushing the whole idea, BetFair and 888.com immediately spring to mind. I think it should be banned on the same grounds as smoking and drinking have been.

What do you think?

Totally agree. :smt003

It was something we were talking about the other night. They banned advertising of tobacco and even fast food outlets before a certain time, but it is still perfectly OK to advertise gambling regardless of the time of day which can be just as detrimental to your state of mind as much as anything.

Also annoys me that it is OK to advertise these payday loans at xxx thousand percent which is often followed by an advert telling you how you can avoid paying off your loans if you have over committed :smt013

I think its called double standards. :smt017

Nope. Don't ban any of it. In my case, the more I'm told I can't do something, the more it pushes me to find a way to do it anyway.

Mmm, advertising fags has been banned, displaying smoking products is now against the law in larger stores,
Fags and booze now have to display health warnings, most financial products now warn of the potential dangers of securing a loan against your home,so,
how the hell can you secure a loan at an apr of around 4,500% with NO PRIOR WARNING ?
I looked at some payday loans the other day, just click and get screwed, if you are desperate for cash, you'd click, knowing your rent can be paid, then read the small print....oh shite

Ban the Ads and follow that by banning the companies themselves, they are just robbing poor people who are at rock bottom anyway.

Yep it's the "promise" of something for (next to) nothing .... with the next to nothing adding up to be a lot. For some, far more than they can afford.

It's ingrained into society now - the lottery being a prime example .... with the BBC actually running programmes to promote it all.

Can't disagree with any of that!

Years ago when I was a lone parent I answered an ad for a Provident rep (only the older members will know what I mean I guess). Bloke came to see me and the job could have been mine but he was so evasive when I asked about interest rates that I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole! I think the 'payday loan' type of thing is the modern equivalent and completely immoral.

And any z list celeb who helps to advertise the crooks should be tied to a tree and set alight.
On second thought I quite like trees.

In which case why not sign this petition No 10 petitions

Might not cover the whole issue, but why dilute it by having another (unless it misses the required amount)

I've signed it :smt003

Just how far do you go in trying to protect people from themselves? How much of a nanny state do you want?

And isnt there some hypocracy in this anyway - there are enough moans on here about speed limits and speeding ( OK in the worng place etc) kills far more people than gambling does.

I donmt want to live in a country where plod is looking over my shoulder and telling me what I can or cannot do however harmful it might be. So I think we should go the other way. Relax gun laws, allow fag advertising, allow soft drugs. If people are daft enough to do these things let them.

The controls on you are already very pervasive - just try doing something as innocuous as buying a pension and see how many hoops you and the provider have to jump through.

absolutely agree and try drawing down some of that pension which I understand anyone is entitled to do and even better was when the great socialist Fenwicks decided to ensure you couldn't take certain pensions early

We already live in the kind of sate we don't want and I for one find the sense of disenfranchisement is disheartening
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.

Plod is always looking over your shoulder, you will be captured on CCTV around 300 times a day.
Relaxing gun laws ? Say that in Birmingham,Bristol,Sheffield,Manchester, London suburbs and see how long it takes to get lynched.
Relax soft drug laws ? Not enough time to enforce them, the law are too busy with fire arms and drug addiction crimes.
Yup Flatlander, you'll NEVER get mugged by a stoner, unless they want your rizla :smt005

I really cannot understand why there is not a legal maximum rate that lenders can charge - maybe two and a half times base rate would be a good place to start (might also get the ridiculously low base rate put back to a more sensible level)

I always thought there was a cap on interest rate charges to stop 'loan sharks'.. Capitalism at it's very best. :smt009
