Falco Lock Set

#1 Post by falcomunky » Thu Sep 27, 2012 6:02 pm

How do all. Long time no posting! :smt009
Hopefully yall wont hold it against me as I need some help asap!
My seat lock has given up the ghost. I think the pins/plates inside the mechanism itself have somehow gotten jumbled up as I cant even get my key in anymore! Strange thing is, my fuel cap lock is beginning to feel like its doing the same bloody thing! :smt013
Anyone have the locks in question (with key obviously!) as I cant get under my hump (ooer) to put her on charge and pretty soon I wont be able to put fuel in her either!
Also, do I simply drill the old seat lock out?
Will it damage the cable, etc, behind it?
Is there another way to get at the catch/cable without grinding the subframe off!?!?!? :smt002
I dont require the ignition lock (yet!) but would consider the full set of three to make things simple, assuming anyone actually has a spare set.
Ive seen a full set on Ebay but the tank cap is severly scratched so Im dubious about the actual locks condition/longevity...
Any and all help greatly appreciated!
FM :smt006

Have you tried lubricating them - might just be they need to be freed up a bit.
Of course locks should be lubricated with graphite powder but if they've gone too far, penetrating oil might be needed.

People have managed to release the seat hump without the key but tend not to post up how it's done due to security concerns.

As for getting at the battery, that's under the rider's seat so you shouldn't struggle to get at that.

Oh - and good to hear from you again. :smt003

Locks...

#3 Post by GregD-UK » Thu Sep 27, 2012 8:03 pm

Hi all,

Hey FM, long time no hear mate. My tank lock was getting stiff and awkward, so I just sprayed some WD40 in there and all's well :smt002 Think with age and the fact maybe dirt and debris might of hindered the key operation.....

Might try in your seat lock as well, just a thought. Have looked for graphite grease locally, might be able to source some for you :smt003

You still got my number?

Nah - powder not grease. grease makes paste.

If the seat lock and the fuel tank are both feeling the same it could be that the key is starting to get worn out. I'd agree with the others though, but of lube in the locks has to be your first try.

As well as amazon, Maplin sell it so if there's one local you could collect, farnell do it, which means RS components will do it too, Halfrauds probably do it (just thinking of possible collection places.

Hi guys n cheers for the replies. :smt004
Ive tried freeing them with that very can of 'Graphite Lock Lube' but no joy. I had to do that earlier this year as well when I first noticed the action getting stiff on the tank n seat locks (felt like the key would get jammed in, but not actually 'gummed' in, if you know what I mean?).
I also tried my still unused spare key but with no joy.
I reckon the plates inside the barrel (that mesh with the key) have fallen into the key-way and blocked it off: Had the same thing happen on my old GP100 a million years ago when the tiny springs (that return the little 'plates') failed on the ignition. :smt009
Basically, I reckon I need a full lock set to be safe tho I cant afford the price that genuine Aprilia parts go for! :smt010
I dont wanna get stranded at the petrol station with my ignition key stuck in the tank lock!
Oh and DR: I do know where the battery is... :smt002
The charging lead for my optimate is routed up thru the rear seat for ease of (normal) access and cable tied in two places to the frame rail. Even with the front seat off I wouldnt be able to free it.

That's what happens when you don't ask a nurse to treat what ails you ;)

What about a nice racing type filler cap?
For the avoidance of doubt and for the benefit of my wife, not everything I may say here will be absolutely true I may on ocassion embellish a little for effect.
That said when it comes to motorbikes, I like to ride side saddle with a nice frock

lol Would love one mate, but finances dictate otherwise! :smt009
Anyone know if the RSV, Tuono or RS125/250 locks are the same? Might help to broaden my searches on Ebay if they are shared...

The Prila part numbers are different, so I assume the actual designs differ too. :smt009
Its hard to tell from the tiny microfiche-type pics: http://www.apriliamotorcyclespares.co.u ... ARTS&uID=0
:smt017

A better pic, but still hard to tell imo... https://www.apriliapartsbuyer.co.uk/par ... rdware-kit

Actually, after closer inspection, I think the RSV ignition and tank locks ARE the same as on the Falco, tho the seat lock is different! https://www.apriliapartsbuyer.co.uk/par ... rdware-kit

the lock mount may be different, but are the actual barrels the same?

Let's face it, you wouldn't go to a nurse to get good advice on a problem with a Falco - you'd choose an Engineer or a mechanic...

The difference with the Mille's seat lock is probably just the length of the bowden cable

As far as I can see, the RSV seat lock barrel has a fixed plate to the back of it which bolts into the side of the tail unit (their locks are side mounted, unlike the Falcos). Not sure about how the cable attaches and wether its any different from the Falco?
The Falco appears to use a spring clip/plate type affair that locks it in place by clamping the fairing from either side (that make sense? Check the above links to see the two parts diagrams that show the differences).
I had thought that I could get away with only buying the actual barrel, but it would appear they are not available seperately. :smt009
